Storms disrupt Italy's Sicily island

A severe storms has hit Italy's Sicily island, disrupting local transport and damaging unharvested crops, the ANSA news agency reported on Thursday.The international airport in the island's city of Catania stayed closed on Wednesday night due to heavy rain and flooding, with all inbound flights diverted to nearby airports.
Railways and highways on the island were also disrupted by landslides. Two factories in Sicily's northern industrial area had to temporarily suspend operation due to heavy flooding, and some 40 people were forced to be evacuated from their homes.A hail storm also severely damaged fruits and vegetables in the eastern part of the island before they were harvested.The local producers' association has asked that a state of disaster be declared for farmers affected by the exceptional weather event.
