Dear Sagar Media Inc,
I was surrounded by unknown women. I was scared and clinging to my grandmother.
The women made me lie down and started removing my underwear. I tried to fight but they held me so tight I couldn’t even move.
Then they spread my legs, grabbed a blade and cut something between my legs.
Sagar Media Inc, I was just a little kid. I had no idea what had happened to me, I was in absolute shock and crying.
It was only years later when I saw a movie on Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) that I realized what had happened to me.
Like me, thousands of my young sisters in the Bohra community are subjected to this practice. It is an act of violence, physical and emotional. It is used to subjugate us.
Neither the United Nations nor India is willing to recognise that this is happening in India. We need your help!
Sign this petition and ask the United Nations to recognize India as an FGM practicing nation.
All our pleas to the Bohra leaders have fallen on deaf ears. Even the Indian Government has failed to acknowledge this issue.
Brave women have fought and managed to end FGM in several African countries. We should be able to do the same in India!
Thank you for your support in advance,
Saleha Paatwala
