Plight of Mohajirs in Pakistan discussed in the UN Human Rights Council

Plight of Mohajirs in Pakistan discussed in the UN Human Rights Council
The International Institute for Mohajirs organized a conference on the plight of Mohajirs in Pakistan, on the sidelines of the 33rd session of the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva on September 23, 2016. Speakers at the conference included Ryszard Czarnecki, Vice President European Parliament, Mohammad Khan, human rights activist from Karachi and Arbaz Khan, President, European Mohajir Network.
Mohammad Khan, while updating the audience on the current human rights situation in Pakistan and problems being faced by the Mohajirs, stated that the Pakistani government continued to ostracize the Mohajirs and through various laws, ensure that members of the community continued to remain ‘outsiders’ in the country that they had chosen to adopt after the formation of Pakistan in 1947. He appealed to the UN to put pressure on the Pakistani government to improve the situation of Mohajirs in the country.
Arbaz Khan, in his speech stated that despite the contributions of Mohajirs  to Pakistani culture and society, the Mojahir community was discriminated against and their rights regularly violated. He acussed the Pakistani government of sponsoring intolerance and hatred against the Mojahirs and deploying various forms of discrimination against them. He concluded by stating that Mohajirs were peace loving people and only wanted to be recognised for their contributions, provided with security, honour and employment.
Ryszard Czarnecki in his comments stated that though the issue of the Mohajirs had not been raised in the European Parliament, he thought that it was a serious human rights issue in Pakistan and the time was right for the European Union to take note of this problem.

Candle light vigil for Pakistan’s ‘Kill and Dump Policy’ in Balochistan

Vice President of the European Parliament participates in Candle light vigil outside the UNHRC in Geneva, in memory of Baloch nationals who lost their lives due to Pakistan’s ‘Kill and Dump Policy’ in Balochistan
Baloch leaders Brahumdagh Bugti and Mehran Marri, along with Ryszard Czarnecki, Vice President of the European Parliament, and Canada-based Executive Director of Baluch House, Tarek Fateh, participated in a candle-light vigil outside the UNHRC in Geneva on September 23, in memory of Baloch nationals who had lost their lives due to Pakistan’s ‘Kill and Dump Policy’ in Balochistan.
Speaking to the media on the occasion, Ryszard Czarnecki, Vice President of the European Parliament, said that the Baloch problem was not just an internal issue of Pakistan since, as a partner of the European Union, Pakistan had the responsibility to ensure that there were no human rights violations in the country. He added that in case the European Union kept silent on the issue, “our silence would be our shame”.
Tarek Fateh spoke of the abuse of the Baloch people and the secular character of the region by the Pakistani Army. He called on the international community to put pressure on Pakistan to allow journalists to Balochistan so that the world would be able to see the stark reality. Mehran Marri, the Baloch Permanent Representative to the UN, demanded the withdrawal of the Pakistani forces from Balochistan, who were responsible for the ‘Kill and Dump ‘ policy against Baloch citizens. Brahumdagh Bugti, President of the Baloch Republican Party, said that the Pakistani government had for long escaped scrutiny of the international  community, for the atrocities committed against the people of Balochistan. However with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi raising the issue, it had now caught the attention of the world. He hoped that the Baloch people would continue to receive this support from India.
The silent vigil was attended by many who wanted to express solidarity with the people of Balochistan, and show their support for their struggle against the human rights atrocities by the Pakistani establishment.

The Ridge and the City: Environmental Politics in Delhi

The Ridge and the City: Environmental Politics in Delhi
Tuesday, 27 September 2016, 3:45 p.m.
Thomas Crowley
Conference Hall, Centre for Policy Research

This presentation explores the environmental politics of the Delhi Ridge, a hilly area that cuts through the National Capital Territory. The Ridge is often described as the green lung of Delhi, a crucial ecological resource in a rapidly-expanding megacity. At present, roughly eighty square kilometres along the Ridge have been notified as Reserved Forests, the highest level of protection the government can give. The earliest notification dates back to 1913, but the vast majority of the area was notified in 1994 and 1996. The current politics of the Ridge largely revolve around its status as a Reserved Forest: whether the notification process has been followed properly; whether the notified areas are being afforested in a timely and ecologically-sensitive manner; whether boundary lines are being drawn properly, if they are being drawn at all; how to handle so-called ‘encroachments’ in the Ridge; and so on. All these issues are important for understanding ecological and political contestations in present-day Delhi.
However, exclusively focusing on the Ridge as a forest obscures a much larger social and environmental shift, which took place over several centuries: the evolution of the Ridge from commonly-owned land used for grazing and firewood collection to a state-owned forest area. But this state-owned zone is surrounded by privately-owned plots used for quarrying, real estate speculation and more, and the boundaries between the two are often quite blurry. Using the theoretical frameworks of political ecology and historical geography, the presentation will analyse these shifts in land use over thelongue durée, and explore their implications for ecological and social justice in Delhi today.
Thomas Crowley is the author of the report Fractured Forest: the Political Ecology of the Delhi Ridge, which he wrote while working for the Delhi-based NGO Intercultural Resources. Beginning in October, he will be a Fellow in the Art, Science and Business Program at the Akademie Schloss Solitude in Stuttgart, Germany.
This is the eightieth in a series of Urban Workshops planned by the Centre de Sciences Humaines (CSH), New Delhi and Centre for Policy Research (CPR). These workshops seek to provoke public discussion on issues relating to the development of the city and try to address all its facets including its administration, culture, economy, society and politics.
