Sr Jounalist Barkha Dutt on NDTV
So since I went public with my earlier battles inside NDTV and called out the hypocrisy of ranting at the Press Club as Anti – Establishment crusaders while desperately seeking help of the BJP ministers and party leaders privately, many of the responses of support have been overwhelming : thank you. Some questions were also raised which I would like to address here along with some points of my own.
1. Why didn’t I speak earlier? Oh But I certainly did- on many emails (my hacked emails capture some of these fights ironically) and via multiple verbal arguments. In fact I spoke so much that by October neither the owners nor the key editors were talking to me any more ! It’s just that while I worked there I did so within the confines of the newsroom as I thought going public was indecorous. Yet, the management told me.that my not batting for them in public in defence of their decision to drop Interviews was a “betrayal.” So is the suggestion that I should have done what a former colleague just did : dissent in public , embarrass the organization, claim the high moral ground and yet conveniently stay on ?! I prefer my route : fight ferociously within and when staying gets untenable because they actively punish you for fighting – you quit. I speak as an ex employee. I am free to do so. Puzzled that my internal argument was a betrayal but a former colleagues public lashing is acceptable! Or is it that the organization is in such a dire place today that it cannot afford to reprimand him in the way it did me ?!
2. The most tired cliched response I’ve heard – when folks can’t come up with anything else is – “But they defended you during Radia tapes controversy”. I have spoken multiple times on that issue -in my book, in interviews, and guess what, even on TV , when I faced a panel of tough questioners for over an hour! Now, did NDTV owners and management subject themselves to a similar one hour grilling by peers from the industry on how they managed their books and on allegations of financial skulduggery – charges way more serious than the ones against me? If not, why not ?. Secondly, while we are on the tapes how many people know that Ms Radia speaks on the tapes of helping NDTV owners – the nearly 400 crores loan came thereafter. The Caravan story on NDTV sought to credit / blame me for this loan when I argued that all I spoke to her about was a news story and I gained nothing more than information. Caravan was wrong: I knew nothing about that loan till much much later when news media reported it. And since I have never held a management position or a financial one ever, even while being a full time employee, I was never going to be made part of any such negotiation. So when we speak of the Radia issue, let’s also examine her role in the financial help she speaks of offering NDTV owners. Haven’t heard much debate on that have we ? I wonder why.
3. Other places are much worse say some:; NDTV tries more than others : SURE. I am adult enough to know that stories are killed in many newsrooms. I am also adult enough to know that in times of existential crisis we would all reach out for help – to govt or to whoever could offer it. The difference is others don’t pretend; they don’t act morally superior and smug and above everyone else. They don’t claim to be something they are not. They don’t stand at Press Club and saw Don’t Crawl while seeking appointments with BJP head honchos by night. This has not been denied by NDTV simply because there are enough witnesses to these meetings and phone calls and they can’t deny them. I am not suggesting any help was offered – the best I know , pleas for help have been soundly rejected. But what’s important is the help was sought while the public pretence carried on.
4. All my life I have lived by what I believe in: sometimes it makes me popular ; sometimes deeply unpopular. So too with this decision. I strongly stand by every word and am open to a no – holds barred debate with any former colleague provided they talk specifics and not in breezy generalisations about legacy and mentoring. many other examples have come to memory since then : how NDTV initially disallowed and dropped the story on National Herald : how it made me edit portions of a Taslima Nasreen interview- the list is endless. And the paranoia with which PC interview was made to vanish – so that even traces of it do not exist on the website today. No lawyers were vetting that one were they ?! So where did it vanish ? And why ? In all these cases no defamation suits we’re involved !
5. Finally for me this is not a right wing or left wing issue. The examples I have detailed involve both the Congress and the BJP and speak to hypocrisy. I am not an activist who is going to cover some things in a shroud of silence because one or the other side could benefit. That is not my concern. I say what I think and what I feel. I would have spoken a lot earlier but when NDTV was raided by the CBI thought my comments would be seen to hit them when they are down. So I was quiet for a bit. But the recent post by a former colleague quoting censorship as an abberation- a knowing falsehood- triggered me to speak my mind. And I am very very glad I did.
By the way – for those caught in the notion of some enforced loyalty- after two decades of work at NDTV – the Owners did not meet me to tell me to my face that I was being punished for being argumentative – maybe they were embarrassed or uncomfortable or didn’t care – that’s their right; they sent their CEO instead to offer me a non daily news role. Even a request by me to buy at market rates my footage from the Kargil war was turned down. So forgive me for being done with this whole notion of loyalty as mouth- silencer. Somewhere along our journey our scores definitely evened out.
I recall two of my peers and friends from the industry had a lot to say when they exited their erstwhile channel a few years ago. So it’s not as if others in the media have not had their say about their experiencences. I fully intend to have mine – without apology or defensiveness and with standing by every syllable. Neither approval nor criticism would steer my mind. Thanks for reading. over and out “
इन चैनलों में ‘NEWS TAK’, ‘SPORTS TAK’, ‘FOOD TAK’, ‘LIFE TAK’, ‘ASTRO TAK’, ‘TECH TAK’ व ‘YOGA TAK’ शामिल हैं।

Hardik to Cut ROOTLESS Congress in Gujarat 10th Time Again
October29, 2017 (C) Ravinder Singh progressindia2015@gmail.com
Though Rahul Gandhi is slowly getting maturity* in politics but Gujarat didn’t voted INC to power since 1985 when it won149 seats and 55.55% votes – 1990 – 33 seats, 1995 – 45 seats, 1998 – 53 seats for about 32 years and not getting clear majority in Lok Sabha since 1984 or (33 years and by 2019 elections 35 years) when it won 404 seats in Lok Sabha polled 49.1% votes and BJP just 2 seats and 7.74% votes. Under Rahul Gandhi INC in 2014 recorded worst ever defeat.
*I closely examined his Speeches in Gujarat – on serious Issues which people have already read in newspapers and when People Start Clapping he Smiles and he Immaturely Thinks he has won the Election THAN HAMMERING THE ISSUE FURTHER.
On issue of CAPITATION FEES – he pretended to have heard it first time – on issue of IITs Higher Learning he didn’t emphasize were all started by his elders – some of his leader was Quoting ‘Hoover Dam’ than BHAKRA DAM plus many thousands. On issue of Stagnant MSME Creditwhich is Negative or below inflation, there was 48.6%growth in last 2 years of UPA-II. Properties not SELLING and Crash in Property value affects all.
When talks of JOBS & STAGNANT WAGES he doesn’t talk of Workers Not Getting BONUS and Pensioners not Getting Diwali eve ALLOWNCES & EARLY Release of October pension.
When he talks to Hardik Patel he doesn’t talk to other Farm Leaders in Gujarat [and India] and talk to ‘Like Minded Political Parties’ who may cut Congress Vote Share also.
When he talks of AMUL he doesn’t talk of, Cooperatives including AMUL, marketing local agri produce Fruits & Vegetables – sell Peanut Butter to MILK SELLING Poor. He forgets to tell that high cost of Fruits & Vegetables responsible for Malnutrition that impacts BRAIN Development also, Supply CLEAN FRESH Nutritious Foods at half price.

Opposition GANGED Up Against Congress in 1975
Congress Never Took Medium, Low & Marginal Income Groups Seriously.
MANREGA Divided Kissan & Mazdoor – Rs.8,00,000 Cr Wasted.
1975: This year is most important in Political History of India – Emergency was declared and entire Opposition Ganged Up against Indira Gandhi. In Gujarat Congress was reduced to 75 Seats and 40.7% votes, Congress (O) Polled 23.6%, Kissan Majdoor Party 11.53%, Independents 11.58%. BJP won 18 seats just 8.82%.
1980: Congress bounced back at Center & in Gujarat won 141 seats and 51.04% votes, Janta Dal faction 21 seats and 22.77% votes – BJP just 9 seats and 14.02% votes.
1985: When Congress won 149 seats, Janta Dal won 14 seats– 19.25% votes and BJP won 11 seats – 14.96% votes.
1990: Equation changed JD won 70 seats, 29.36% votes, BJP 67 seats and 26.69% votes, Congress was reduced to 33 seatsand 30.34%.
Neglect of Farmers Favored BJP, Cut Congress.
Congress Can’t be Winning When Scindia, Pilot, Jakhars & Raj Babbar represent Farmers. MSP increase in UPA-I translated in to 205 seats, had UPA-I and later invested even 30% of Resources in Rural India it wouldn’t have lost any election. Junk Useless Leaders – INFOSYS inducts over 25% New Staff – Cut 15% Every Year
When Demonetization was announced at 8 PM a year ago within a minute after getting the confirmation I checked Rs.100 notes, I had four not even one days household expenditure.
It was most TERRIBLE thing in my life. Wrote blog immediately but Congress, Rs.500 Cr a year party was even behind AAP in ‘Condemning’ it. Poor suffered the most – had practically no money in hand – can’t be paid for wages in old currency.
I expected INC next to, like ‘Namak Satyagraha’ buy and sell goods in Old Currency and Lead the Opposition.

BMC demolition cause of Shanties blaze
Surprise demolition by BMC is emerging as the main reason of burning of hundreds of shanties
BMC is up for second phase of demolition without offering any relief/rehabilitation
Civic body flouted basic norms to be followed before any eviction
Police harassing the evicted persons who are living in open and have nowhere to go
Mumbai | 29-10-2017: In what is appearing as the most brutal demolition drive carried out by Mumbai Municipal corporation (BMC) that led to burning of hundreds of shanties of poor, the civic body is up for second phase of demolition without offering any relief or rehabilitation to the evictees.
The demolition driving was in complete violation of basic norms that needs to be followed before an eviction. BMC issued a 48 hours’ notice prior to the demolition drive, however, it came down to demolish shanties merely after 15 hours in a total surprise manner without even allowing people to save their belongings or move to a safer place. Instead BMC is putting blame on the slum dwellers for causing fire to save their house. If someone believe BMC then one can imagine the magnitude of helplessness if someone goes to the extent of burning his/her house to save it!
Seriousness of a 48 hours’ notice can be understood by the order of the Bombay High Court passed on Friday in which it stayed the demolition of another slum which was not served such notice prior to the demolition. Activists of Ghar Bachao Ghar Banao Andolan pointed this out before the Bombay High Court on Friday when the revenue officials came to demolish the slum in Four Bungalows in Versova named Siddharth Nagar. This slum is saved as of now.
Those who have been evicted from Garib Nagar are left to live in open without any rehabilitation or relief offered to them. Even this was not enough, police kept on thrashing those living on road and even threatening to arrest the evicted persons.
Since the demolition was surprise in nature, nobody got the chance to save their belonging. There is a greater chance of bursting one or the other gas cylinder that were kept in almost all the houses. Locals even allege that the power supply was not cut before carrying out the demolition. BMC’s cold heartedness can be seen in the videos in which bulldozer found continuing demolition even when houses were burning.
The demolition is being carried out at the behest of a Bombay high Court’s order. The Court ordered removal of shanties near the Tansa pipeline. However, nowhere in the order did the Court ask the civic body to resort to such brutalities. Eviction have been taking place in other parts of Mumbai of the shanties near Tansa pipeline followed by rehabilitation, however in no other case such atrocities were faced by the shanty dwellers.
Putting blame for causing fire, on the poor resident with least representation becomes easy and easier especially when it is a Muslim majority settlement.
Evicted persons are getting two times meals from local community kitchen, thanks to local shopkeepers and residents efforts.
We demand:
- Criminal action against the concerned officer of BMC for carrying out demolition without following the eviction norms and the 48 hours’ notice.
- Rehabilitation of all those evicted
- Relief material and enough cash compensation to all those who lost their homes in the fire
- Fair investigation for the cause of fire.
