India celebrates 62nd Republic day

India celebrates 62nd Republic day today as it was on this day in 1950 the Constitution was adopted.Country’s military might, economic progress and its rich culture will be on show at the Republic day parade at the Rajpath in the national capital.Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono will be the chief guest at the parade.President Pratibha Devi Singh Patil will take salute of the marching contingents.

President has approved 128 awards 12 in the category of Foreigners:These comprise 13 Padma Vibhushan, 31 Padma Bhushan and 84 Padma Shri Awards. There are 31 ladies among the awardees.

Padma Awards have been announced most prominent are Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission Motek Singh Ahluwalia, Wipro Chairman Azeem Premji, Economist Vijay Kelkar, Brajesh Mishra, known writer Dr. Sitakant Mahapatra and Art scholar Kapila Vatsayan are among thirteen people selected for Padma Vibhushan Award.

Bollywood stars are listed Music Director Khayam, cine stars Shashi Kapoor, Wahida Rehman and Theatre Director Satyadev Dubey are to be honoured with Padma Bhushan: others in this category are former Secretary Shyam Saran and Social Worker Shobna Ranade.Cine Stars Tabu, Kajol, Irfan Khan, Pop Singer Usha Uthup, Karnatak vocalist Janakiraman, Cricketer V.V.S. Lakshman, weightlifter Kunjarani Devi, Wrestler Sushil Kumar are among 84 persons selected for Padma Shree Awards.

Granville Austin, an American historian and a leading authority on the Indian Constitution; Karl Harrington Potter, American indologist who has written the Encyclopedia of Indian Philosophies; and former Delhi University Vice Chancellor Prof Upendra Baxi, who is now teaching in Britain.

Bollywood are Tabassum Hashmi Khan, alias Tabu, Kajol and Irfan Khan Pop Singer Usha Uthup, Karnatak vocalist Janakiraman, Cricketer V.V.S. Lakshman, weightlifter Kunjarani Devi, Wrestler Sushil Kumar are among 75 persons selected for Padma Shree Awards.VVS Laxman, who was today honoured with the prestigious Padma Shri award, said it was great and satisfying moment for him as his achievements while playing for the country have been rewarded.
