MELBOURNE CITY HAS 1812 MCM DAM STORAGE, DELHI NCR ZERO
August28, 2017 (C) Ravinder Singh progressindia2015@gmail.com
It is extremely tragic that India is led by Corrupt & Incompetent even matters of Water, critical for India’s existence. India don’t release water data on daily basis –Melbourne for example provides hourly to historic data at one website with graphs, bar charts etc.
Melbourne City of 4.5m Population has 1812 MCM Dam Storage capacity to ensure Sustainable & Clean water supply – when average annual inflows into Storage Dams is 419 MCM for last 20 years and daily water requirement is 1 MCM. Full Dams Storage capacity can serve Melbourne City for 1812 days – current storage is 1180 MCM enough for 1180 days Melbourne City requirement.
Delhi NCR Region with over 30m and fast growing population has No Dam Storage though a Large River – Yamuna flows through it.
Delhi is dependent on Sewage, Drainage flowing in Yamuna & Ground Water supply as own resources and water allocations from Bhakra and Tehri Dams.
Hard Contaminated Water at Zero Pressure is supplied in Delhi to 60%-70% Population that requires COSTLY Home Storage, Pumping & RO Purification.
Renuka, Lakhwar-Vyasi and Kishau Dams on Upper Yamuna River with Storage Capacity of 1.805 MAF or 2226 MCM of water – when annual Inflows in Dams are 11,000 MCM downstream of Dams to 13,000 MCM at Okhla. [419 MCM for Melbourne Dams]
Ø 30 Times more Inflows in Yamuna Projects than all Melbourne Dams – Provide 0.146
mhac irrigation, 1060 MW of Power, and provide Flood Protection to over 1 mhac.
Ø Yet Yamuna Dam Projects, Critical for regions water needs are not being developed
since UYB agreement in 1954 – for over last 5 yrs these dams are included in list of Projects of ‘National Importance’ – [Pdf attached.]
Ø On Aug24 – 79 BCM of water was stored in 91 CWC dams – 5% of Indian River Flows.
Ø Three Indus Storage Dams Supply 30 BCM Clean Water but not used for Drinking.
Melbourne Dams storages on Aug27, 2017 in MCM

DIPP RELEASED CONSOLIDATED FDI POLICY CIRCULAR 2017
The Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India has released the Consolidated Foreign Direct Investment Policy for the year 2017 with an intent and objective to attract and promote foreign direct investment in order to supplement domestic capital, technology and skills, for accelerated economic growth.
Brief highlights of the Consolidated FDI Policy 2017:-
· For the first time FDI circular included start-ups, which can raise up to 100 percent of funds from Foreign Venture Capital Investor (FVCI). Start-ups can issue equity or equity linked instruments or debt instruments to FVCI against receipt of foreign remittance.
· A person resident outside India (other than citizens/entities of Pakistan and Bangladesh) will be permitted to purchase convertible notes issued by an Indian startup company for an amount of Rs 25 lakh or more in a single tranche.
· It also contains provisions relating to the issue of equity/equity-linked instruments/debt instruments and convertible notes by start-ups. Almost all these provisions have already been notified by authorities, mainly the RBI.
· NRIs can also acquire convertible notes on non-repatriation basis.
· The latest consolidated FDI policy, which usually factors in various changes over the past one year to make it easier for foreign investors to get informed of various rules, also formally clarified that the restriction of 25 per cent on sales of one vendor through an e-commerce marketplace will be computed on a financial year basis. The period to be considered for compliance was not mentioned earlier.
· While proposals relating to banking, mining, defence, broadcasting, civil aviation, telecoms, pharmaceuticals etc will have to be approved by administrative ministries, the DIPP will be the authority to clear proposals relating to areas including retail (single and multi-brand, and food). For proposals relating to financial services activities that are not regulated by any financial sector regulator or where only part of the financial services activity is regulated or where there is doubt regarding the regulatory oversight, the department of economic affairs will clear the proposals.
· The policy simplifies the definition of ‘venture capital fund’ defined FDI-linked performance conditions without diluting substance. So instead of complex definitions under the earlier FDI regime, ‘venture capital fund’ is now defined as a fund so registered under the Sebi (Venture Capital Funds) Regulations, 1996, while FDI-linked performance conditions are basically the sector-specific conditions for companies receiving foreign investment.
The Consolidated FDI Policy Circular for 2017 has been attached for your ready reference.

HURRICANE HARVEY CLAIMS SEVEN LIVES IN TEXAS
United States, floodwaters from Tropical Storm Harvey, which has already killed at least seven people in Texas and was expected to drive tens of thousands from their homes, will likely rise in the coming days. Officials warned as heavy rains continued to pound the US Gulf Coast.
National Guard troops, police officers, rescue workers and civilians raced in helicopters, boats and special high-water trucks to rescue the hundreds of people still stranded in and around Houston, the nation’s fourth-largest city.
The storm was the most powerful hurricane to strike Texas in more than 50 years when it came ashore on Friday near Corpus Christi, 354 km south of Houston, and the worst was far from over as the National Weather Service issued numerous flood warnings across the region.
US President Donald Trump plans to go to Texas today to survey the damage and may in the future visit Louisiana where the storm is now dumping rain.Trump warned that Texas faces a “long and difficult road” to recovery after floods triggered by an unprecedented rainstorm, saying there’s “never been anything like it. Trump, facing the biggest US natural disaster since he took office in January, has signed disaster proclamations for Texas and Louisiana, triggering federal relief efforts.
PENTAGON $593MN SALE OF PLANES TO NIGERIA
Pentagon has notified Congress of a $593 million aircraft and arms sale to Nigeria, the News Agency of Nigeria reports. It includes 12 Super Tucano A-29 aircraft, weapons and other arrangements. The deal, approved by the State Department on August 2, also entails training, munitions, maintenance, spare parts, hangars and other infrastructure. The Pentagon’s Defense Security Cooperation Agency said the US signed the agreement to support Abuja’s military operations against “terrorist organizations Boko Haram and ISIS West Africa, and Nigerian efforts to counter illicit trafficking in Nigeria and the Gulf of Guinea.” Nigeria has been trying to purchase the aircraft since 2015, but former president Barack Obama delayed the deal due to concerns about Nigeria’s human rights record. In February, President Donald Trump expressed his support of the deal in a phone call with Nigerian president Muhammadu Buhari. Media agencies
UNHCR CHIDS AUSTRIA
UN refugee agency has denounced “xenophobic debates” in Austrian politics ahead of a parliamentary election in October, calling on political parties to set a more inclusive tone and do more to help those seeking sanctuary. “In recent years a considerable amount has been achieved in Austria in taking in, providing for and integrating refugees,” the office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said in a statement posted on its Austrian arm’s website on Monday. “At the same time, however, we view xenophobic debates and exclusionary tendencies with concern. We call on all democratic parties to carry out political debates thoughtfully and to put what unites above what divides,” it added. Media agencies

Everyday journeys of urban working mothers: Evidence from France and India
Vandana VasudevanTuesday, 29 August 2017, 3:45 p.m.
This paper looks at the daily mobilities of urban working mothers as they manage the double burden of their wage earning and household responsibilities. Using secondary data sources the study attempts to deconstruct the spatial and temporal characteristics of their journeys. It supplements this with narratives from personal interviews conducted with a sample of this cohort in the in three cities-Grenoble (France), Jalandhar and Trichy (India). While doing so it demonstrates the distinction between the mobility that the women manage to achieve versus spatial accessibility to destinations. It dwells on the role played by urban policies in women’s quotidian life, their daily journeys and eventually, on their overall well-being.
Vandana Vasudevan is doing her doctorate from the University of Grenoble , France on the topic of everyday mobilities of urban working mothers and the role of urban policies in shaping their experiences in the city. She is an alumna of the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad and Lady Shriram College prior to that. She completed a Masters in Urbanism from the Institute de Urbanisme, Grenoble, France in 2014. She is the author of the book “Urban Villager: Life in an Indian Satellite Town” (SAGE publications 2013) and is a writer/columnist for leading dailies on urban issues.
