Government today said, there are 886 private TV channels functioning in the country while licenses of 149 channels were cancelled till July this year. Information and Broadcasting Ministry said permission to 1,035 private channels were accorded to operate in the country till July. The Ministry further said, the number of Permitted Private Satellite Television Channels in India is 886 of which 399 are news and current affairs channels. It also said that there are 768 Television channels which are permitted for uplink from India and also downlink into India. Out of these 768 channels, 377 are news channels.
