Dear friends,

Instituto Cervantes in New Delhi, in collaboration with the Embassy of Argentina in India, has programmed a special program on the occasion of the 100th aniversary of the birth of one the most important authors in the Spanish Literature, Julio Cortázar. The author of “Rayuela” visited India in 1968, and stayed in the residence of the Mexican Ambassador in India, Octavio Paz, which was attested and captured by a video during the Holi Festival. As a result of his trip he wrote one book, “Prose from the Observatory”, inspired in Jaipur’s Jantar Mantar and illustrated with photographies by Cortázar himself (photos edited afterwards by Antonio Gálvez in Paris), as well as the “Poem 1968”.

On August 26th (the date of his 100th anniversary), we will have a round table on  his works, with talks about his short stories (by Professor Lipi Biswas, JNU ), his masterpiece “Rayuela” (by Professor  Minni Sawhney, Delhi University), and about the book he wrote after visiting India,  “Prose from the Observatory” (by Professor  Sonya Gupta, Jamia Millia Islamia ). Following the round table, you can attend a performance (in English) of his radio script “Goodbye, Robinson”. An imaginative piece with ironica thoughts about the globalization and the developments in the modern world, using Daniel Defoe’s characters Robinson Crusoe and Friday. The performance will be play by Kaivalya Plays and directed by Varoon P. Anand. Closing the event we will open a video installation made by young Spanish artists, based on Cortázar’s short stories (recorded on the author’s  voice).

Moreover, throughout this month we will screen a film series based on some of his most renowned stories (“Stories of Cronopios and Famas”, “Circe”…). Besides this, on Thursday 28th we will enjoy a dramatized reading of some stories from the book “All the fires the fire”. The program will be closed with another theatre play “Piece in Three Scenes”, directed by César Lorente Ratón and perform by students from our institute and Delhi universities .

This is an excellent opportunity to discover and go in depth in the works of this master of literature.

If you need more information, please, do not hesitate to contact us.

Looking forward to meet you in any of our forthcoming events, warmest regards
