Maharashtra’s Women Swimming Continues to Win Medal for the State on the Second Day of 70th Glenmark Senior National Aquatic Championship 2016
Key Highlights:
(1)    Monique Gandhi wins Gold in the 1500 meters Freestyle Senior Women category for Maharashtra.

(4)    Mr Sajan Prakash, the Indian Olympian breaks the National Record in the 200m Butterfly Senior Men’s category.

Mumbai, September 25, 2019:  Maharashtra Women continues to dominate medal tally for the state on the Second day of 70thGlenmark Senior National Aquatic Championship. Monique Gandhi got Maharashtra the perfect start on Day 2 winning the gruelling 1500m Freestyle with a time of 18:21.13 beating Shruti Mahalingam from Tamil Nadu who swam a fantastic last lap to set up a rivetting finale. Shruti clocked 18:21.53 while the bronze was picked up by her state mate P M Abhishikta who finished with a time of 18:43.59.
The 4*100m relay in the Women’s category arguably witnessed the best race of the day. Maharashtra represented by Yuga Barnale, Monique Gandhi, Trisha Karkhanis and Rayna Saldanha won the race beating early leaders Gujarat and leaders after the third leg Karnataka. The event had the best swimmers in attendance. Manaa Patel proved her class by establishing a strong lead for Gujarat after the first backstroke leg. Monique Gandhi swam a fantastic breast stroke leg but Gujarat still maintained the lead at the half way stage. Damini Gowda provied her mettle in the butterfly leg by swimming a near flawless race giving Karnataka a slender lead over Maharashtra going into the final freestyle leg. The final leg was Rayna Saldanha all the way finishing extremely strongly to get Maharashtra the gold 04:36.31. Karnataka won silver with 04:38.33 while Gujarat won bronze with 04:41.41.
Earlier in the day Trisha Karkhanis won a silver medal in the 200m Butterfly with a time of 02:27.94. Damini Gowda of Karnataka dominated the race winning the gold with a time of 02:21.99 while Shishti Nag of Chattisgarh won bronze with a time of 02:28.11.
The 50m butterfly saw favourite Annie Jain who trains at the Glenmark SAI programme  pipped to the post by Chahat Arora of Chandigarh who won gold with a time of  00:35.11. Annie finished at 00:35.39 for the silver while A.V. Jayveena of Tamil Nadu claimed bronze with a time of 00:35.40.
Olympian Sajan Prakash of Railways who was the first Indian to break the 2 minute barrier in the 200m butterfly repeated his feat to win the gold setting a new national record clocking a time 01:59.35 followed by team mate Supriyo Mondal who clocked 02:03.42 . Manoj Mitesh representing Services won bronze with a time of 02:07.04.

US Fed keeps its federal funds rate unchanged

United States Federal Reserve kept its federal funds rate unchanged amid recent weak economic data and tepid inflation.
The Fed said in a statement released yesterday after the two day policy meeting. The Fed raised its target range for the federal funds rate by 25 basis points to 0.25-0.5 percent in December last year, the first rate hike in nearly a decade.
However, a slowdown in global economy since the start of this year and other global financial risks have made Fed policymakers cautious to hold off on any further rate hikes.

India to attract Chinese MNC

China’s Yangzhou city is set to host India Week celebrations from tomorrow with a business and investment meeting to be attended by CEOs of top Indian firms. The city in coastal Jiangsu province has been an important business partner for India in the Eastern China Region. Consulate General of India in Shanghai, Prakash Gupta, said companies in Yangzhou have shown keen interest in investing in India as part of the projects available under the ‘Make in India’ initiative. He said, Secretary of the ruling Communist Party of China’s Yangzhou unit, Xie Zhengyi, will soon lead an investors’ delegation to India to explore opportunities for investment.
As part of Yangzhou’s International Cuisine Festival, an ‘Incredible India Pavilion’ will also be inaugurated tomorrow, showcasing select Indian food delicacies and for promoting tourism-related travel options for Yangzhou visitors to India.
India will showcase investment opportunities to Chinese multinationals at the India-China Strategic Economic Dialogue next month. NITI Aayog Vice-Chairman Arvind Panagariya told media that there will be deliberations on cooperation in the areas of highways, railways and urban development in view of India’s thrust on developing smart cities and push to infrastructure development in the country to achieve high economic growth. He informed that a big delegation of 220 businessmen and government officials led by National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) Chairman Xu Shaoshi will participate in the two-day Dialogue on October 6-7, 2016.
There are five working groups under the dialogue– energy, resource conservation and environment protection,infrastructure, high technology and policy coordination. Panagariya said that Chinese multinationals are shifting their base from China to other countries in order to be more cost effective in view of high labour costs.

6.8 earthquake strikes off Fiji

A powerful 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck off Fiji today but there is no threat of a tsunami. US seismologists said, the offshore quake hit at 9:28 am local time and was centred around 100 km northeast of Ndoi Island in Fiji. Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said there is no tsunami threat.
