DELHI UNIVERSITY FOUR YEAR PROGRAMME: SENIOR ACADEMICIANS SEEK PRESIDENT'S INTERVENTION

An eight member delegation met the Hon'ble President of India and Visitor of Delhi University Shri Pranab Mukherjee to urge his intervention to stop the implementation of the Four Year Undergraduate Programme with multiple exit point at Delhi University from July 2013.
The delegation comprised of Prof Romila Thapar, Prof Krishan Kumar, Prof Satish Deshpande, Prof Pulin Nayak, Prof Shaswati Mazumdar, Nandita Narain , Abha Dev Habib, Member, Executive Council and Shabnam Hashmi.
Prof Krishna Kumar said that Delhi University is being destroyed through this ill-devised “reform”. Prof Romila Thapar said that while Delhi Universit’s undergraduate programme was the best in the country, the courses devised for the Four-year programme are substandard and would make Delhi University a laughing stock. She said that no quality restructuring can be achieved in such a short span of time and Delhi University is not prepared in terms of infrastructure, teaching faculty and libraries and therefore, implementation of FYUP would be irresponsible and should be deferred pending thorough discussion. The delegation also underlined the need of a national debate as this restructuring is in contravention with the National Policy of 10+2+3 and will create problems of coordination amongst various institutions. The members also emphasized that the FYUP with multiple exit points will work against the democratization of education and this should concern the Government.
Roughly 60,000 students will take admission in Delhi University this year. It would be highly irresponsible to subject these young livesto an “experiment” that is so flawed. The Visitor was urged to intervene as per the provisions of the Act of 1922 under which Delhi University was instituted. A petition was also submitted to the Visitor.
A memorandum was submitted to the Hon'ble President and the delegation also quoted and submitted the relevant provisions and powers under the Delhi University Act under which the Hon'ble President as the Visitor of Delhi University could intervene in the matter.
