AUSTRALIA, US BEGIN JOINT MILITARY EXERCISE
Australia and the US began their biggest ever joint military exercises on Thursday, a show of force, largely at sea, aimed at sending a message both to allies and potential foes, including China. The exercises involve 33,000 US and Australian troops on board battleships equipped with strike jets. Admiral Harry Harris, head of the US Pacific Command, asked how he thought China would view the exercises, said the size of the deployment was intended as a signal. “I’m pleased about that message it sends our friends, allies, partners and potential adversaries,” Harris told reporters on board the USS Bonhomme Richard.

US State Department has downgraded China’s status in its report on human trafficking to the lowest level. It says the country has not taken serious steps to end its own complicity in trafficking, including North Koreans working as forced laborers in China.The department released its annual Trafficking in Persons report on Tuesday.
The report lowered China’s standing by one notch from last year to the lowest of the 4 ranks — for the first time in 4 years.
Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said North Korean citizens are working overseas as forced laborers to earn foreign currency for their country. He asked nations hosting North Korean laborers to send them home.
The administration of President Donald Trump has placed importance on cooperating with China over North Korea’s nuclear and missile programs. Observers say the latest downgrade is likely to draw a sharp reaction from Beijing.

PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP TO VISIT FRANCE
US President Donald Trump will visit France for the Bastille Day celebrations on July 14th. His visit will also commemorate the US entry into World War One 100 years ago.White House spokesperson Sean Spicer said on Wednesday that Trump accepted French President Emmanuel Macron’s invitation and will visit Paris.
Spicer says Trump looks forward to reaffirming the United States’ strong ties of friendship with France.
France’s presidency said on Wednesday that US President Donald Trump had accepted an invitation to attend the annual Bastille day military parade in Paris on July 14. “As part of the commemoration marking the 100th anniversary of the entry of the United States into World War I,” Trump has accepted an invitation from President Emmanuel Macron, the French leader’s office said
During this year’s traditional Bastille Day military parade down Paris’ Champs-Elysees avenue, American soldiers will walk together with French soldiers.
The 2 leaders say they will further build on the strong partnership between their countries.
Nonetheless, differences are emerging between the 2 countries on some global issues.

MERKEL PUT CLIMATE CHANGE AT THE CENTER OF G20 TALKS
Addressing the challenge of climate change will be one of the central tasks of the upcoming G20 summit of the world’s largest economies in Hamburg, German Chancellor Angela Merkel told lawmakers on Thursday. In a speech to the German parliament, Merkel said she expected discussions on the matter to be difficult in the wake of US President Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw from the Paris climate pact, adding that, as host, she would lead the talks with the aim of furthering the pact’s goals. “We cannot expect easy discussions on climate change at the G20 summit,” she said. “Our differences with the US are clear.”
