Ebola death toll reaches 1,470 – WHO

The Ebola epidemic in West Africa has led to 1,427 cases out of 2,615 known infections, the World Health Organization (WHO) said Friday. In the latest update WHO reported 77 more deaths and 142 new laboratory-confirmed probable or suspected cases. The WHO has said the true scale of the world’s worst Ebola epidemic has been underestimated due to families hiding infected relatives in their homes and the existence of “shadow zones” that medics cannot access. The organization is due to issue a strategy plan to try and deal with the epidemic, which has shown no signs of abating, in Geneva next week.

The only way to tackle the threat is by working with the Iraqi government which has troops on the ground, Hammond said, adding that dialogue with Assad would not advance the cause. The Islamic State has bases in northern Syria as well as in over one third of Iraq.

Arun Jaitley commissions INS Kamorta

23082014
Defence Minister Arun Jaitley commissions INS Kamorta
Defence Minister Arun Jaitley on Saturday commissioned India’s first indigenously-built stealth anti-submarine warfare INS Kamorta at naval dockyard in Vishakhapatnam.Jaitley also received the guard of honour at the event. The warship has been built by the state-owned Gardenreach Shipbuilders in Kolkata and is the first vessel in the Navy whose all weapon systems are manufactured indigenously.
It will form part of the Vishakhapatnam-based Eastern Command. Kamorta has enhanced stealth features that make her less susceptible to detection.
India today commissioned the first indigenously built stealth Anti-Submarine Warfare Corvette, INS Kamorta, at an impressive ceremony at Visakhapatnam naval dockyard. The Defence Minister Shri Arun Jaitley who commissioned the warship, described the development as ‘the coming of age of our ship building industry’.
The commissioning of INS Kamorta has added a new dimension to the ASW capability of the Indian Navy and in particular, the Eastern Fleet. The multifarious missions that can be undertaken by the ship truly reflect the enhanced multi-dimensional capability of the Indian Navy.
Admiral RK Dhowan, Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Satish Soni, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief Eastern Naval Command, Rear Admiral AK Verma (Retd), CMD, Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) and various other dignitaries were present during the commissioning ceremony.
INS Kamorta is first of the four ASW Stealth Corvettes designed by the Navy’s in-house organisation, the Directorate of Naval Design (DND), under Project 28, with an indigenous component of about 90%. Measuring 110 meters in length, 14 meters in breadth and displacing 3500 tons, the ship can achieve speed of 25 Knots. The ship is fitted with Anti-submarine Rockets and Torpedoes, Medium and Close-in Weapon Systems and indigenous surveillance radar Revathi. The ship is also capable of carrying an integral ASW helicopter.
Shri Jaitley said in the last three months, both the Prime Minister and he had been associated with many an accretions made into the Indian Navy namely, INS Vikramaditya, INS Kolkotta and INS Kamorta. But this one was special because of the high indigenous content. He said, at the moment, 42 warships are under construction in various shipyards of the country which is a welcome sign of the health of the ship building industry. He expressed confidence that the measures taken by the government will infuse healthy competitive spirit between the public and private shipyards.
Kamorta also boasts of other “firsts” such as a foldable Hangar Door and a Rail-less Helo Traversing System, which will give helicopter operations from the corvette a significant edge over other warships.
Enhanced stealth features have been achieved by ‘X’ form of Hull, full beam superstructure, inclined ship sides and use of Infrared Signature Suppression system for cooling the Engine and Generator exhausts. The Ship has a ‘Combination of Diesel and Diesel’ propulsion system with 2 Diesel Engines along with one gear box on each shaft. The common raft mounted Gear Box and Diesel Engines give the vessel very low radiated underwater noise. This is well complemented with an efficient propeller which has high cavitation inception speed. The design also incorporates active shaft grounding system and multi zone Impressed Current Cathodic Protection for suppression of Extremely Low Frequency Electromagnetic signature. The very low under water acoustic signature makes it a ‘silent killer on the prowl’.
INS Kamorta has a multitude of systems such as Total Atmospheric Control, Integrated Platform Management, Integrated Bridge, Battle Damage Control and Personnel Locator System. This provides a contemporary and process oriented System of Systems for optimal functioning of the warship.
With her state of the art weapons and sensors, INS Kamorta is well equipped to fight in Nuclear, Biological and Chemical warfare conditions. The ship, in essence, showcases the nation’s warship design capability and industrial prowess
The ship has a complement of about 15 officers and 180 sailors. The accommodation and living spaces have been designed with special emphasis on ergonomics and habitability. The ship is commanded by Commander Manoj Jha, a Gunnery Specialist.

Pranab asks IITs to develop new cutting edge technologies

23082014
Prez asks IITs to develop new cutting edge technologies
India is dependent on imports in several sectors including defence and health, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday asked the IITs to take up the challenge of developing products in these critical fields.
He also asked these premier institutes to contribute towards user-friendly innovations in Indian Railways and fulfilling the vision for “housing for all” through technology that would enable rapid construction of economical, eco-friendly and structurally sound houses.
Addressing a conference of Chairmen of Boards of Governors and directors of IITs here, he asked the IITs to instill among bright young minds at various IITs a sense of “service” towards the nation.
Citing examples of a range of defence and health sector equipment and sensitive and security-related items like currency ink and tear gas which are imported, he said “I refuse to believe that India does not have the talent to make these things.”
Wanting the IITs to take up such challenges, Modi asked them to come out with projects that can provide innovative solutions to the common people in their day-to-day lives.
Modi calling upon IITs to bring about a “positive change” in the quality of life of the people in the country.
“Science is universal. Technology must be local,” he said, while describing IITians as a “great force”. He also asked IITs to adopt nearby engineering colleges to play a “mentoring” role and search for innovations developed by people.
Modi said IITs must encourage their alumni to interact with students so that their experience can be leveraged and sought their systemic mapping and grouping for optimum utilisation of their experience.
With ranking of the institutes being one of the agendas at the conference, Modi opined that while global rankings are important, “we should also set up our own parameters for rankings, which will serve as an in-built mechanism for change and improvement”.
It is then the turn of President of India who spoke at the function presided over by Pranab Mukherjee at Rashtrapati Bhawan. President Pranab Mukherjee has asked the IITs to develop newer, cutting edge technologies and utilise them for creating a variety of in-house solutions for India’s domestic requirements and export them to developing countries as well.
Addressing the concluding session of the conference of Chairmen, Board of Governors and Directors of IITs in New Delhi last evening, he also expressed his desire for early implementation of a project connecting students of Northeast to India’s premier engineering institution — the Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT).He said presentations made by the IITs at the conference underscored their commitment to active engagement with local communities, their desire to undertake cutting-edge research and their pursuit of synergetic industry-academia collaboration.”Mukherjee called upon IITs to play a pivotal role in our endeavour to develop newer, cutting edge technologies and utilise them for developing a variety of in-house technology solutions for our domestic requirements and also to export the same to other developing countries similarly placed,” said a Rashtrapati Bhawan statement today.
The President said he was also happy to learn the concept of ‘Ishan Vikas’ -a comprehensive plan to bring school children from the Northeastern states in close contact with the IITs and IISERs during their vacation periods. “Ministry of HRD and the Council of IITs need to coordinate and ensure early implementation of this initiative,” he said.
Some of the suggestions that have emanated from the IITs include sharing of best practices, efforts to increase the number of published papers between three to five per year, promotion of a post-doctoral culture in order to develop and retain quality faculty, continuous revamping and up-gradation of curricula.
The President said he was happy to see the presentation made by the Director, IIT-Delhi on technology enabled learning and Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs).
He said these programmes are the way forward and must be used to supplement conventional methods of teaching in India, particularly in the field of higher education.
“It is imperative that a well-defined timeline is put in place for their roll-out and content development with the focus being on making these courses more India-centric,” he said.
The agenda of the one day conference included steps required to improve global ranking of IITs, giving impetus to research and innovation, use of technology in pedagogy and online learning, deepening of the engagement of IITs with community and resource mobilisation as well as alumni participation.
In all, 29 Chairmen, Board of Governors and Directors of IITs participated in the conference.

Friday, August 22
Dear all,
Please find enclosed the detailed statement and supporting documents released by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) convenor and former Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal on Friday, August 22, to expose the real reasons behind the removal of whistleblower officer Mr Sanjiv Chaturvedi, as the Chief Vigilance Officer of the AIIMS.
Kejriwal’s statement along with supporting documents shows that Chaturvedi was removed for exposing corruption and not for the technical excuses being given by the central government now.
Kejriwal, at a press conference along with party leaders Manish Sisodia, Gopal Rai, Pankaj Gupta and Dilip Pandey, made public the documents which nail the lie of union health minister Dr Harshvardhan that the charge of CVO was taken away from Chaturvedi since he did not fulfil the eligibility criteria laid down by the Central Vigilance Commission for the post.
The AAP has demanded that Chaturvedi be immediately reinstated as CVO of AIIMS, the CBI should probe the entire issue of his removal and health minister Dr Harshvardhan should immediately resign failing which the Prime Minister should sack him.
The AAP is of the clear view that the victimization of anti-corruption crusader Sanjiv Chaturvedi is a litmus test for Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The Prime Minister’s statements during the Lok Sabha election campaign and also after being sworn-in in as PM that he would adopt zero tolerance against corruption, which is more dangerous than cancer will be tested for the first time in this case.

Germany’s Manuel Friedrich to power Mumbai Franchise of Indian Super League
Friedrich has played international football for Germany and been a critical part of world famous Bundesliga clubs Borussia Dortmund, Bayer Leverkusen, Werder Bremen and Mainz 05

He will be the very first recognizable German footballer to play in India

Mumbai, August 22, 2014: Striving to build a formidable outfit with world-class football players on board, the Mumbai Franchise of the Indian Super League (ISL) today announced the signing of Germany’s Manuel Friedrich for the inaugural season of the upcoming league. Friedrich comes to the Mumbai Franchise with over 15 years of priceless professional experience as a top quality centre back, packed with a remarkable 413 appearances at various levels of football. He will be the very first recognizable German footballer to play in India and the only team member in the ISL to have played 2014 UEFA Champions League football.

Known to be a strong defender and acknowledged for his fantastic aerial duels, the 34-year-old will be the backbone of the Mumbai squad’s defense strategy. The team will rely on decades of experience the German footballer has gained playing in his country’s top leagues. With his abilities, he will also be an asset to the team during set pieces due to his aerial skills.

Commenting on the acquisition, team owner Ranbir Kapoor said, “Manuel Friedrich is unquestionably a highly experienced fine international centre back and we are thrilled to have him on board. As a defense stalwart, he will be a critical asset to the team. To top it all, Manuel is passionate about football in Asia. We are delighted to have him amidst us and welcome him onboard.”

On joining the team, Manuel Friedrich said, “I am delighted to play for the Mumbai Franchise and be part of the exciting inaugural season of the Indian Super League. Playing in Asia has always been on my mind and I am thrilled to be part of the Mumbai team. I look forward to being in India and doing my best for the squad. The presence of a number of skilled Indian and international players will make the contest very exciting indeed.”

Apart from nine international appearances for his home country, Friedrich has represented clubs such as Borussia Dortmund, Bayer 04 Leverkusen, Werder Bremen and FSV Mainz 05 during his career. Playing for Borussia Dortmund during the 2014 UEFA Champions League, Friedrich was part of the playing eleven during its match against Real Madrid at their Signal Iduna Park.

The talented central defender began his career at SG Guldental 07, making his professional debut with Mainz, which he joined in 1995. In 2000, he made his competition debut, in a home match against FC Energie Cottbus. Following this, Friedrich became known as a defensive stalwart, scoring an astonishing eight goals as Mainz finished fourth, just one point shy of promotion.

Attracting attention from the Bundesliga thanks to his stellar performances, he signed with SV Werder Bremen in 2002 and participated in a number of successful matches including the team’s 2003–04 Bundesliga victory.

In early 2004, Friedrich returned to Mainz, still contributing with 17 matches en route to top-level promotion. In May that year, he scored one of four goals in the league, netting the second in the decisive 3–0 home win against SV Eintracht Trier 05 on the final day of the campaign. In the following three seasons combined, he rarely missed a game.

As a brilliant defense unit, in 2007, he moved to Bayer Leverkusen, contributing to consecutive home wins against Karlsruher SC and VfL Bochum. He scored ten league goals in his first three seasons combined and was part of the squad that finished as runners-up at the DFB-Pokal (German Cup). Friedrich could only appear in 19 games in 2010–11 due to injury, with Leverkusen finishing in second position and qualifying to the UEFA Champions League. In Europe’s premier club competition, on 23rd November 2011, he headed home in the last minute to help the hosts come from behind against Chelsea FC to win it 2–1.

The Bad Kreuznach born player joined Borussia Dortmund in November 2013 and made his debut playing against FC Bayern Munich. He scored his first goal for BVB in February 2014, netting his team’s third in a 5–1 away demolition of former club Werder Bremen. This was also his 16th goal in the German top division.

With the signing, the Mumbai Franchise has started building its competitive squad for the tournament, which kick-starts in October 2014.

100 Days BJP Tod-Fod-Jod Politics, Weakness, Incompetence

100 Days BJP Tod-Fod-Jod Politics, Weakness, Incompetence
August23, 2014 (C) Ravinder Singh ravinderinvent@gmail.comGOI was to release 100 day report but it didn’t materialize,
Inventor’s report follows.
India is 1.25b people country so the entire world is interested in us
but get received Confused Signals. Sometimes it is ‘Make in India’ –
India open to all Foreign Companies to set up their manufacturing
plants in India – within few days BJP stops visit of 6 MPs to USA to
see a Farm Show for three days. Why not send all 700+ MPs, on Study
Tour?
700+ Members of Parliament should have been DIRECTED to VISIT Farm
show in USA for 15 days to Study Dams, Irrigation, Farming,
Harvesting, Storage, Processing, Marketing of Foods. But a tweet
stopped all this – What A DEMOCRATIC TRAGEDY?
NID head uses term ‘Tod, Fod & Jod’ way of learning Inventing – which
translates to ‘Break, Crack and Join’ – BJP government too is
indulging in TOD FOD JOD of all kinds.
There are already major Confrontations with Judiciary on Appointment
of Judges – One Nomination was withheld, Judges appointment issue is
HOT, Leader of Opposition is mishandled – The Speaker was advised not
to appoint LOP, then Supreme Court questions government decision not
to appoint LOP. Meanwhile Government decides to amend Lokpal Bill to
bypass selection process without Leader of Opposition – All Tod Fod
Jod in Judiciary.
GOI is Breaking Institutions – First Group of Ministers were
DISMANTLED and Second BJP government wants to ‘Dismantled Planning
Commission’ because it employs staff close to opposition party –
replace it with ‘8 Member Think Tank – Led By Dullards.’ Yesterday GOI
constituted ‘Group of Ministers for Gas Price Increase’ but didn’t
appoint any ‘Panel to Review Total Failure of Private Companies to
Extract Hydro Carbon ‘Black Gold’ Even After Reporting World Record
Discoveries.’
Rs.1,13,000 Crore Digital India program too is Wild Dream – 90% of
Public Services can be Digitally Provided at no cost almost
immediately. But even critical disaster management information is not
Publically Available – I get daily dozes of NASA disaster report in my
Email account, why can’t I get daily weather report or Mandi Reports
in my Email account?
A 85 years old Senior Citizen in South Delhi can’t get Appointment
from CGHS Dispensary and every time had to wait for an hour and don’t
get all the medicines same day then has to visit again to get ‘Balance
of The Medicines Which are Common Prescriptions for Diabetes, Blood
Pressure & Cholesterol Control.’
But Most Weird ‘India Has No Priority to Store 800 BCM of Water Going
to Sea Every Year Which is Economical & Technically Sound – GOI has
abandoned all Multipurpose Dams but prefer to Connect Rivers which
shall have very little surplus water post monsoon’
79% Farmers have no SAY in policy making for Farmers – though Majority
of BJP MPs want to abolish APMC act to let Free Marketing of Farm
Produce but Minority BJP MPs from Trading Lobby PREVAIL OVER MAJORITY.
Oldest ally of BJP Shiromani Akali Dal has Condemned Jeering of CMs.
The Problem with BJP Gov is that it has No Qualified & Capable People
to Run Different Departments, PMO, Planning Commissions, and
Ministers.
