Chinese President Xi Jinping has agreed with European Union leaders to further strengthen bilateral relations in trade and other fields.
Xi on Monday became the first Chinese president to visit EU headquarters in the Belgian capital Brussels.
He had separate talks with European Council President Herman Van Rompuy and EU Commission President Manuel Barroso.
EU officials say the leaders reaffirmed their intent to strengthen ties, including efforts to advance negotiations for concluding a bilateral investment deal.
The EU is China’s largest trade partner. China is the EU’s second-largest, after the United States.
As China and the EU have deepened their economic ties in recent years, they’ve seen trade frictions intensify. But the two sides took steps to defuse disputes over solar panels and communications equipment before Xi’s visit.
On Tuesday, Xi is scheduled to visit a postgraduate university institute in Bruges, northern Belgium, and give a speech on strengthening China-EU relations.
