Ivan Gasparovic urges EU integration

Slovakia's leader spoke the need for further European economic integration in overcoming the region's credit woes.President Ivan Gasparovic spoke to media in Tokyo on Wednesday ahead of the EU summit. The meeting in Brussels will focus heavily on the debt crisis.

Gasparovic said Slovakian people wonder why they have to pay for the failures of Greece. But he added his people understand that supporting Greece is a guarantee for the future of Slovakia.

Slovakia improved its financial condition by taking strict austerity measures before introducing the euro three years ago. Many Slovakians strongly oppose giving financial support to Greece.

The president stressed integration is essential because the debt crisis can no longer be tackled independently by member states.
