CAG to audit all rural development expenditures: Jairam

Rural Development Minister, Jairam Ramesh on Monday said that the Comptroller and Auditor General, CAG, will audit all rural development expenditures in the country from the year 2007 to 2011. Talking to reporters in New Delhi, Mr. Ramesh said that the performance audit of Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, MGNREGA, for all the states will be placed before Parliament by the end of the winter session this year. He also informed that his Ministry spends about 40 thousand crore rupees each year on the job guarantee scheme. The Minister said, the audit of Indira Aawas Yojana will also be taken up next year and the audit system will be extended to other schemes gradually. Mr. Ramesh said that it will be mandatory from this year, for every Gram Panchayat’s expenditure to be certified by a Chartered Accountant, drawn up from a district level panel prepared by CAG.
