Kenya's electoral body has announced that next general elections will be
held on 4th of March next year after it failed to secure agreement
between the two ruling coalition leaders.
Independent Electoral and Boundary Commission Chairman Issack Hassan said they have been forced to set the date since President Mwai Kibaki and Prime Minister Raila Odinga have failed to agree on a date as set out in a court ruling. Hassan said they have also been forced to intervene to end anxiety which has been growing among Kenyans and international community to fix the polls date.
The announcement would now give the electoral body a go ahead to plan and announce when the country should elect new leaders.
Pressure has been mounting for the two leaders to fix election date. Foreign governments including Britain, Germany and U.S. have been calling on the country's leaders to fix the date.
