STOP LEAD POISONING IN CHILDREN

On the occasion of International Lead Poisoning Prevention Week, WHO urges countries to address lead paint as a first step

Geneva – 18 October –Lead poisoning has devastating health consequences in particular for children, with childhood lead exposure estimated to contribute to 600,000 new cases of children with intellectual disabilities every year. Overall, 99% of children affected by high exposure to lead live in low and middle income countries, says WHO on the occasion of International Lead Poisoning Prevention Week of Action, and calls on countries to strengthen national actions to eliminate lead paint.

Lead paint is a major source of potential lead poisoning for young children. It may be found in the home, on toys, furniture and on other objects. Decaying lead paint on walls, furniture and other interior surfaces creates lead-contaminated dust in the home that young children easily ingest. Mouthing lead-painted toys and other objects also exposes young children to lead. The sweet taste of lead paint means that some children even pick off and swallow small chips of paint.

“Lead poisoning remains one of the most important environmental health concerns for children globally, and lead paint is a major flashpoint for children’s potential lead poisoning,” says Dr Maria Neira, WHO Director for Public Health and Environment. “The good news is that exposure to lead paint can be entirely stopped through a range of measures to restrict the production and use of lead paint.”

It is estimated that 143 000 deaths per year result from lead poisoning and lead paint is a major contributor to this. Its use creates a health problem for many years into the future. Even in countries that have banned leaded paint decades previously, such paint continues to be a source of exposure until it is finally stripped and replaced. The cost of replacing lead paint means that people living in older, poorly-maintained housing are particularly at risk, and this disproportionately affects economically-deprived communities.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has identified lead as one of ten chemicals of major public health concern, and lead requires action by Member States in order to protect the health of workers, children and women of reproductive age. Such actions include adopting regulations and procedures to eliminate the use of lead decorative paints and provide information to the public on renovation of homes where lead paint may have already been applied.

“Paints with extremely high levels of lead are still available in most of the developing countries where paint testing has been conducted as part of the efforts of the Global Alliance to Eliminate Lead Paint. In most of the countries with lead paint, equivalent paint with no added lead is also available, suggesting that alternatives to lead are readily available to manufacturers,” says David Piper, Deputy Director, UNEP DTIE Chemicals Branch. The International Lead Poisoning Prevention Week of Action, provides an excellent opportunity to raise awareness of the widespread availability of lead paint.

Worldwide, 30 countries have already phased out the use of lead paint. The Global Alliance to Eliminate Lead Paint, co-led by WHO and UNEP, has set a target of 70 countries by 2015.

At high levels of exposure, lead damages the brain and central nervous system to cause coma, convulsions and even death. Children who survive such poisoning are often left with intellectual impairment and behavioural disorders.

At lower levels of exposure, which cause no obvious symptoms and that previously were considered safe, lead is now known to produce a spectrum of injury across multiple body systems.  In particular, lead affects brain development in children, resulting in reduced IQ, behavioural changes such as shortening of attention span and increased antisocial behaviour, and reduced educational attainment. These effects are believed to be irreversible. Adults are at increased risk of kidney disease and raised blood pressure.

The International Lead Poisoning Awareness Prevention Week of Action runs from 20-26 October 2013.This year's theme, "Lead-Free Kids for a Healthy Future", underscores the importance of avoiding the use of lead paint and using safe alternatives in order to prevent children coming to harm from lead poisoning.

SPIELWARENMESSE TO OPEN HALL 3A AND INTRODUCE NEW HALL LAYOUT

19102013

Wooden Toys product group to partially move to the new Hall 3A
School Articles product group to be showcased alongside Educational Toys in hall 4 from 2014 onwards
Festive Articles and Carnival offering extended to the whole of Hall 9
The fair team is increasing the exhibition space for baby and infant articles for the 65th Spielwarenmesse. “The demand our buyer for baby and infant articles has greatly increased in recent years and is continuing to grow. We have decided to extend the space in order to accommodate this development”, explained Ernst Kick, Chairman of the Board of Spielwarenmesse eG. Therefore, the range will now feature baby equipment in addition to toys. With everything from buggies, nursery furniture and accessories to car seats, trade visitors can expect a new spectrum of products for infants in Nuremberg from 2014. “We are delighted that Spielwarenmesse has enlarged the area devoted to products for babies and toddlers, and look forward to attracting new groups of international visitors at the fair.  We are taking part at Spielwarenmesse for the first time, because we have noted an increasing trend in the overlap between toys and articles for babies and toddlers”, says Sabine Schrenk, Head of Marketing and PR, Kiddy GmbH, manufacturer of child safety seats and baby carriages from Hof, Northern Bavaria.
The new Hall 3A adds an extra dimension to the Spielwarenmesse, allowing it to appropriately present the closely related product groups of Dolls, Soft Toys in Hall 1, Baby and Infant Articles in Halls 1, 2 and 3 and Wooden Toys and Craftworks in Halls 3 and 3A. The redesign and extension of the offerings in the area of baby and infant articles will provide buyers with the ideal platform for gaining inspiration and extending their range according to their customers’ needs.
Given their affinity, the School Articles, Stationery, Creative Design product group will be exhibited in the same space as the educational toys. Both will be showcased in Hall 4 from the next Spielwarenmesse onwards. Therefore, Hall 9 will be available in its entirety to the Festive Articles and Carnival product group.
With 170,000 m2 of exhibition space, the 65th Spielwarenmesse will be the largest ever. The entire toy industry will meet in Nuremberg from 29 January to 3 February 2014 to find out about the latest news and trends in the market. Almost 40 percent of the 73,500 trade visitors come exclusively for the Spielwarenmesse. The high proportion of international buyers – from 113 countries at the last count – and customers from different markets particularly add to the appeal of this fair, the industry’s largest gathering anywhere in the world.

Stock, Show, Sell in Latin America Made Simple
SOLEMN Group and Grupo RAS tie-up to boost exports from India

New Delhi, October 18, 2013: SOLEMN group, a government recognized export house has signed the first ever MOU with the duty free port of Montevideo in Latin America with Hon. Ruben Azar Sacrone, President, Grupo RAS, at Montevideo, Uruguay. This initiative will revolutionize and boost exports from India in the upcoming and opportunistic market of Latin America, serving as a gateway to all states in the Latin American region – Brazil, Argentina, Bolivia, Uruguay, Paraguay, Chile, Mexico and Panama.

Exporting products to Latin America has never been easy for the Indian manufacturer- traders due to the distance and delivery time constraints and hence they are not able to tap the full potential of the Latin American market. The agreement between SOLEMN and Grupo RAS is set to change all that, as the  Port Trade Center where SOLEMN is setting  up  a permanent warehouse and showroom with inventory,  is exempted from all taxes and duties. For Indian manufacturer-exporters, this is an easy, smart and competitive way to develop sales and distribution channels in South America .

Announcing the agreement, Mr. Shyam Tandon, Chairman and Managing Director of SOLEMN group said, “Considering the ongoing recession in the export arena internationally, currently Latin America is the only region and upcoming market which can provide the required thrust and opportunities for the Indian Export Industry. Upcoming International events in South America like the FIFA world cup scheduled to be held in Brazil from 12thJune to 13thJuly, 2014 and summer Olympics scheduled to be held in Rio de Janeiro Brazil on Aug 5-21,2016 and many other important International events will give an added boost to business and consumption in these markets.”

SOLEMN group will have complete facility of STOCK, SHOW AND SELL under this agreement at the Port Trade Center in Uruguay. The products would be categorized under the following heads-Handicrafts,Jewelry,Textiles,Commodities,Construction,Utility, Equipments, Utensils, Home Décor, Ayurvedic and Herbal Products, Apparels and more. Jewelry will get the brand name – SOLEMN and rest of the products will be branded as ADITTI.

This initiative will certainly boost the Indian products with “MADE IN INDIA” tag in Latin America. “Indian goods, especially handicrafts, jewelry, and textiles have a huge potential in Latin America. This agreement will specially help the SMEs and small manufacturers who are constrained to export their products due to the long distance between the regions and Govt regulations. SOLEMN will procure large export orders for them, facilitate quality checks at multiple levels to ensure that the orders are serviced and fulfilled and also assist with  the logistics. This agreement will also bring in valuable foreign exchange to the Govt’s kitty,” added Mr. Tandon.

American Airlines Announces DFW International Airport’s First Flights to Hong Kong and Shanghai

17102013

New flights to connect the world’s fastest growing economies and major global airport hubs
American Airlines announced it will launch new international service from Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW) International Airport to Hong Kong and to Shanghai in the summer of 2014, marking DFW’s first-ever flights into Hong Kong and China. American will serve the DFW to Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) route daily with Boeing 777-300ER aircraft, and it will fly between DFW and Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG) using Boeing 777-200 aircraft.
“American’s new flights to Hong Kong and Shanghai will begin an exciting era for DFW and are among the most significant air service development announcements in DFW Airport’s history,” said Robert Hsueh, Chair, Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport Board of Directors. “These direct routes connect DFW to major destinations in Asia and will play a key role in further strengthening ties between our region and Asia.”
“Today’s news underscores our commitment to strengthen American’s global network in the most important markets around the world,” said Tom Horton, Chairman and CEO of American Airlines. “This is just another example of how we’re taking a fresh look at everything we do to provide what our customers value most — from new planes, products and services, to new destinations around the world. Simply put, we’re building an even stronger foundation to succeed in our pending merger with US Airways.”
The new American flights to Hong Kong and Shanghai extend the most prolific period of international air service expansion in DFW Airport history. DFW has now added 17 new international destinations to its flight portfolio over the past three years, giving the Airport a total of 204 destinations, including 56 international markets and 148 domestic airports.
“We’ve been working hard on building our international relationships, and our work continues to pay off for North Texas,” said Fort Worth Mayor Betsy Price. “Today’s news is great for the Metroplex and a landmark development for the state of Texas, whose residents will have direct access to Hong Kong and Shanghai for the first time in our history. The Asian market is ripe for Texas business and tourists alike.”
“DFW Airport, Mayor Price and I have been advocating for more direct access to the Asian market because it’s critical for businesses here and across the state,” Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings said. “These new routes will represent more than $360 million in annual economic impact for our region and launch Dallas and Fort Worth into a new dimension of international business and cultural engagement.”
Passengers flying the new routes will find the world’s finest airports at either end of the flights. Like DFW, Hong Kong International Airport and Shanghai Pudong International Airport each rank among the top airports in the world for customer service by Airports Council International (ACI), and all three airports are inducted into the ACI Director General’s Roll of Excellence for maintaining outstanding customer service marks over a period of five years.
American’s service between DFW and Hong Kong service represents American’s first-ever service into Hong Kong, and will connect two of the busiest hubs in the oneworld® alliance, as well as the largest hubs for two of oneworld’s original carriers, American and Cathay Pacific.
American’s service between DFW and Shanghai will connect the world’s most populous city with the fastest growing metropolitan region in the United States, as well as two longtime partner airports. DFW International Airport and the Shanghai Airport Authority signed an airport alliance in 2008, which has led to exchanges of information and best practices as well as training exchanges for the airports’ respective aircraft rescue firefighting teams.

National Skills Development Corporation and India @75 announce the 3rd edition of ‘Power to Empower 2013’
The challenge will promote innovative and sustainable solutions to address India’s Skill Development crisis and develop a strong skills ecosystem in India
Oct 14’ 2013 | Delhi, India: Power To Empower (P2E 2013), a national skills development challenge organized by National Skills Development Corporation (NSDC) and India@75 recently launched its third edition in mid-September 2013. Supported by the Muthoot Pappachan Foundation, the CSR arm of the Muthoot Pappachan Group, the P2E 2013 Challenge is aimed at identifying, selecting and rewarding the best solutions bridging the gap between the supply and demand of skilled labour in India.
The application period is open now until December 1, 2013 and P2E 2013 invites individuals, groups as well as organisations to apply. Winners of P2E 2013 will receive cash prizes of INR 1.5 lakh and INR 3.5 lakh for the Idea and Operations categories respectively, capacity building support as well as nationwide visibility. For more details, please visit:  www.powertoempower.in
Approximately 53% of employers in India say that skills deficiency is one of the key reasons for entry-level vacancies[1]. Currently, of the 15 million individuals who enter the work force, only 3% undergo vocational training due to limited access to such training opportunities in a fast growing economy. As a result, a majority of India’s population cannot realize the employment opportunities necessary to improve their income and lead a more prosperous life.
Recognizing this, P2E 2013 invites entrepreneurs, students, non-profits, corporates as well as enterprises with innovative and scalable solutions to apply for this challenge and contribute to the development of a sustainable vocational skills ecosystem in India.
Applications for P2E 2013 will be accepted as part of two distinct categories – Idea and Operations. The Idea category will focus only on short ideas with a solution concept developed only on paper whereas the Operations category will be open to those with an existing for or non-profit solution already in place addressing this issue.
The winner of the Idea and Operations categories will receive INR 1.5 lakh and 3.5 lakh cash respectively by the Muthoot Pappachan Foundation, the CSR arm of the Muthoot Pappachan Group. In addition, both winners will also receive access to the high profile capacity building Empretec program, an initiative of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development.
Three finalists within each category will also be chosen, and in addition to the winners, will receive national visibility, networking opportunities, passes to high profile events and capacity building support through access to training courses and renowned experts.
The first connector of a winner and the applicant with the highest public votes in each category will also receive a cash reward of INR 10,000 and INR 15,000 respectively.
Complete selection criteria for both the Operations and Idea categories can be found here.
Dilip Chenoy, CEO and MD of NSDC comments, “P2E 2013 is one such initiative that will foster creation of self-sustainable business models in the skilling space in India. The competition aims to propel India’s growth story by creating a large pool of industry ready workmen and also catalyse improved livelihood for millions across the country”.
Rajan Navani, Chairman, National Committee, India@75 further adds, “Now in its third year, P2E has previously helped students realize their entrepreneurial dreams and also provided strategic support to early-stage enterprises with solutions addressing India’s skill gaps.”
Ennovent – an organisation, which accelerates innovations for sustainability in low-income markets – is managing P2E 2013 on behalf of NSDC and India@75. In addition, TiE Delhi-NCR is serving as a knowledge and delivery partner for the challenge and National Entrepreneurship Network (NEN) as the key outreach partner.
Applications for P2E 2013 are open now until 1 December 2013. For more details visit www.powertoempower.in

Gauri Monga Takes Opening Day Honours at the 4th USHA DGC LADIES OPEN AMATEUR GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP 2013

New Delhi, October 15: Home favourite Gauri Monga sank back to back birdies on the 15th and 16th holes to grab the lead at the end of Day 1 of the 4th USHA DGC LADIES OPEN AMATEUR GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP 2013. Gauri finished the day with a score of two under 70, a clear three strokes ahead of second placed Ridhima Dilawari, also of the Delhi Golf Club. Both Gauri and Ridhima put up a fine display of percentage golf, both carding just one bogey through 18 holes, but Gauri’s three birdies on the day, meant she holds a great advantage going in to Day 2.
Gauri’s was also the only sub-par round of the day as most of the field struggled to even save par on a course which has been known to test even the very best. Seher Atwal came in third with a card of three over 75 and defending champion Tvesa Malik finished joint fourth with an eventual score of six over 78.

Apart from SIM card for Mobile phones, introduced in 1995, government of India has launched a number of large socio-economic projects based on smart card in recent years. Major projects like Population Register/National ID card, if and when implemented on a full scale, would be the largest project on Earth. Projects like Voter ID Card, PAN Card, initiated, funded and implemented by the Central Government but currently not on Smart cards, can also be easily integrated on a Multiapplication smart card. Apart from these, there are a number of Financial and Banking applications being introduced on smart card.

A number of projects based on RFID and Biometrics technologies like Unique Identification, Tolling, Automotive RFID applications, Number plates and many others introduced recently, have potential to become huge projects.

SmartCards Expo 2013 will have special Focus on Smart Card technology and applications. The following two International Conferences are being organised during the show:
·         International Conference on Smart Card Manufacturing in India – Prospects & Challenges, on October 17, 2013, which will be Inaugurated by Mr. J.
