India asks Pakistan to destroy 42 operational terror camps

India has again asked Pakistan to destroy the 42 terror camps operational on their soil. Defence Minister A K Antony told this to reporters on the sidelines of the Coast Guard Commanders' Conference in New Delhi on Tuesday when asked about India's concerns over the existing terror camps in Pakistan.

In the recent past, reports have suggested that a large number of terrorists are waiting on the other side of the Line of Control (LoC) to infiltrate into Jammu and Kashmir.

To a query on the impact of the pullout by the US forces from Afghanistan in the next couple of years, he said, a resurgent Taliban can be a security concern for India after western forces leave the war-torn country.

American troops are scheduled to leave Afghanistan by 2014 and are engaged in the process of building capabilities of the Afghan National Army to enable it to handle security on its own.

Durand Cup this year is scheduled from 24th September to 15th October 2011. The tournament will be conducted in two stages. Stage –I will be Qualifying Knock Out and Stage - II will be Quarter Final League round.

The Qualifying Knock Out round matches will commence from 24th September 2011. 20 teams have been accommodated in Qualifying Knock Out rounds. Four Regimental teams from the Army, one team each from Indian Navy and Indian Air Force, two teams from DSA as recommended by Secretary, DSA. Five teams from Para Military forces i.e. BSF, CRPF, Assam Rifles, Punjab Police and Uttrakhand Police. Two teams from PSU Viz. State Bank of Hyderabad and State Bank of Travancore and four teams Second Division i.e. Sporting Club De Goa, Lajong Shillong, and Mohmmedan Sporting Club. Two teams from private sector i.e Bhawanipur Football Club and Tata Football Academy. They will be divided into two groups and ten teams each. Winner of each group will be promoted to Quarter Final League round.

Nine teams from National League standing they are Salgaocar SC, Sikkim United, Churchill Brothers, Pune FC, Mumbai FC, Prayag United, Air India Mumbai, HAL Bangalore, ONGC and Services football Champion Army Red. Two winner teams of Qualifying rounds will compete in this round. Hence total 12 teams have been divided in four groups of three teams each. Winner of each group will play Semi-Finals in alternate fashion i.e. Winner of Group – I will play against Winner of Group – III and Winner of Group – II will play against Winner of Group – IV. It will be played on Knock Out basis. The Final Match is scheduled for 15 Oct 2011.

COSCO Platina FIFA approved football is the official ball of the tournament. The cash award for the Winner, Runners up and the 3rd postions will be awarded with Rs. 20 Lakhs, 10 Lakhs and 05 Lakhs respectively.

Indian win bronze in Asia Cup

Indian eves defeated defending Champions Korea 2-0 to win the bronze medal in the 3rd Girls U-18 Asia Cup hockey tournament at Bangkok on Sunday.Goal scorers for India were Anupa Barla (43rd) and Navjot Kaur (68th minute).India dominated the proceedings, despite Korea holding on goalless in the first half.The Indian strikers led by Skipper Poonam Rani, Neha Goel, Navjot Kaur and Anupa Barla exhibited classic skills pushing the Korean defenders constantly.

The Indian midfielders Deep Grace Ekka, Balvinder Kaur Mehra and Nikki Pradhan constantly fed the forwards with well measured and accurate passes.

Deep defenders Jaspreet Kaur and Sandeep Kaur alongwith goalkeeper Bigan Soy stood out strongly to deny the Korean forwards any space in the Indian striking circle.

In the last edition of this Championship at Shanggai in 2009 India had finished 5th.

The Indian Team shall be returning to Delhi on Monday.

Britain backs India for permanent seat in UNSC

Britain has backed India's bid to get permanent membership of the UN Security Council. The support came at a meeting between External Affairs Minister S M Krishna and his British counterpart William Hague on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. The two Ministers also discussed bilateral relations and exchanged notes on Libya, Syria and reforms of the UN Security Council.

Briefing reporters foreign Secretary Ranjan Mathai said the two leaders also talked about the upcoming meeting of the Commonwealth Heads of Government (CHOGM) in Perth in Australia in October.

Asked about the planned meeting of Mr. Krishna with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Monday, the Foreign Secretary said it will be for a review of bilateral relations and how to carry them forward. The two countries will look at what other steps need to be taken to advance commercial operations.

Giving details on the bilateral meetings of the Prime Minister with President of newly created South Sudan and Prime Minister of Nepal, Mr Mathai said a whole gamut of bilateral relations came up for discussion.

He said South Sudan sought assistance in capacity building in the areas of medicine, education, agriculture and infrastructure The two countries decided to strengthen co-operation in the Hydro carbon sector.

On Nepal, Mr Mathai said Prime Minister Baburam Battarai briefed Dr Singh on the peace process in the Himalayan state.

Saina enters Japan Open semis

Saina Nehwal entered the semifinals of Japan Open Super Series badminton tournament in Tokyo after dispatching Singapore's Juan Gu in straight games in just half an hour on Friday.

The fourth-seeded Indian defeated Juan 21-17 21-13 to make the last-four stage, where she will take on Germany's Juliane Schenk.

Saina was facing Juan after almost three years and the Indian dominated her world number 23 rival just the way she did in 2008.

Saina opened a massive 18-9 lead and it all seemed like a stroll in the park but Juan fought back for a while to reduce the gap to 19-17.

But Saina was unruffled by the fightback and clinched the opening game by notching up three successive points after that.

Saina's domination only increased in the second game and she relied on her trademark smashes to clinch the issue with ease.

The 21-year-old Hyderabadi has a good chance of reaching the finals as well, as she has a good one-on-one record against Schenk.

India to see 8% growth this fiscal despite Q1 slowdown: Pranab

Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee on Thursday expressed confidence that India will be able to achieve 8 per cent growth this year, even as he noted that the global economic environment remains an area of concern."We will have 8 per cent growth even this year, though the first quarter growth figure is 7.7 per cent," he told reportersin New Yorkafter meeting leading Indian industrialists at an investment forum.>He said a good monsoon could ensure agricultural growth of about "4 per cent-plus" and growth in the manufacturing and service sector "clearly indicates that it will be possible for us to have the growth at around 8 per cent for this year".
Mukherjee said India has projected 9 per cent growth for the 12th Five-Year Plan (2012-17) and the country is taking necessary steps to ensure that the momentum continues. On the outlook for the rupee, he said the Reserve Bank of India is "watching the situation".;"The RBI Governor has made it quite clear that as and when the situation warrants, the RBI will intervene-But-Sensex at the Bombay Stock Exchange posted its biggest single-day loss in over 26 months, plunging 704 points, or 4.1 percent, to 16,361, today. The Sensex had lost 232 points at the day's high and fallen 749 points at the day's low. .

An Expert Group for Modernization of Indian Railways Set Up
In a major move to give further impetus to Railways’ modernization plans, an Expert Group has been constituted under the Chairmanship of Mr. Sam Pitroda to recommend ways and means to modernize Indian Railways to meet the challenges of economic growth, the aspirations of the common man, the needs of changing technology and the expanding market while at the same time ensuring adequate focus on addressing social and strategic requirements of the country in consonance with Indian Railways’ national aspirations. The formation of this significant committee was announced by the Union Railway Minister, Shri Dinesh Trivedi at a Press Conference here today. Shri Sam Pitroda, Adviser to the Prime Minister of India, Shri M. S. Verma, former Chairman, SBI and a Member of this new Committee, the Chairman, Railway Board, Shri Vinay Mittal and the Board Members were among those present on the occasion.

The terms of Reference of the Committee would involve outlining strategies for modernization of Railways with a focus on track, signaling, rolling stock, stations and terminals; using ICT for improving efficiency and safety; augmenting existing capacities of Railways through indigenous development; reviewing projects and addressing PPP issues.

The Committee will inter alia address issues connected with organization, management and resource mobilization and professionalization of manpower on Indian Railways. The other eminent members of the Committee are –

Gilani wants US to 'do more' in anti-terror campaign

Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani on Friday said Pakistan had contributed enormously in the fight against terrorism and extremism and that it was now time for the United States to "do more" in the campaign against terror.
"Now, it's the time that they (US) should do more (for the war on terrorism)," Gilani told reporters on the sidelines of a function at a girls' college in Islamabad.
During the past decade, Pakistan had "sacrificed much in battling the menace of terrorism" and the country should not be "pressurized to do more", he said.
The premier's remarks came a day after Pakistan's Foreign Office rejected a warning by US Defense Secretary Leon Panetta that Washington would retaliate against attacks by Pakistan-based militants.
The Foreign Office spokesperson Tehmina Janjua said Panettas remarks were "out of line" with ongoing counter- terrorism cooperation between the two sides.

Jwala-Diju reach semis of China Masters -Saina-out

India's ace shuttler Saina Nehwal exited from the China Masters Superseries but the top mixed doubles pair of Jwala Gutta and V Diju kept the tricolour fluttering by registering a thrilling victory to advance to semifinals at Changzhou on Friday.

Fifth seed Saina lost 8-21 12-21 to top seed and world number one Yihan Wang in a women's singles match that lasted for 33 minutes at the Xincheng Gymnasium.

Jwala and Diju, however, held their nerves in crucial moments to register a 17-21 21-19 21-9 win over Robert Blair of Scotland and Briton's Gabrielle White in a 46-minute match.

The world number 56 pair will take on the Korean duo of Yeon Seong Yoo and Ye Na Jang in the semifinals tomorrow.

The 21-year-old Saina was no match for the Chinese as she sent down as many as 23 smash winners against eight by the Indian. She also played better at the nets, registering 13 winners compared to Saina's four.

Burmese government says that foreign investments that operate in the name of Burmese citizens must be transformed into a legal foreign investment, and the government is preparing laws that will create a more favourable business climate.

Aung Naing Oo, the deputy director of the National Planning and Economic Development Ministry, said that the government would enact laws for foreign investments in the name of Burmese citizens made since 1988. It will also offer businesses incentives.

“To attract foreign investments, we will find loopholes in the foreign investment laws to be modified to make the laws flexible. We will create a favourable condition. Now we are modifying the laws and they will be enacted soon,” Aung Naing Oo told Mizzima. He did not disclose how many businesses operate in the name of Burmese citizens but are controlled by foreigners.

The government will introduce the changes because foreign-controlled businesses in the name of Burmese citizens could harm the investment policy and the national interests in the future, Aung Naing Oo said.

He said that notifications to revoke some investment laws would be declared soon. New laws will be introduced in Parliament for approval by lawmakers, he said.

Among the proposed changes, said Aung Naing Oo, would be to allow privately owned land to be rented by foreigners, and the removal of some restrictions in exchanging foreign currencies.  Currently, foreigners can only rent government-owned land.

The authorities announced the new policy in a meeting with Burmese business owners at the Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry (UMFCCI) office in Rangoon.

UMFCCI Vice Chairman Hla Maung Shwe said that one of the causes of low foreign investment in Burma are the existing foreign investment laws that set the currency exchange rate at just six kyat per one US dollar and other restrictions.

“The main obstacle for them is the existing [official] exchange rate of six kyat per one dollar. The second weak point is that the government could not fulfill its promises to some investments. There are restrictions. If we modify the regulations, the situation will improve,” Hla Maung Shwe told Mizzima.

If the government changes the relevant laws and allows foreign companies to do business more freely, foreign investments will increase and the country will be able to adopt technologies and promote its exports, creating more job opportunities, he said.

A Delhi court is likely to pronounce its order on Thursday on framing of charges against 17 accused in the 2G scam including former telecom minister A Raja and DMK MP Kanimozhi.
Special CBI judge O. P. Saini, who heard arguments on behalf of the accused and the CBI for over a month on day-to-day basis, had reserved the order on 29^th August.

Winding up arguments, special CBI Prosecutor U. U. Lalit had said that there was “sufficient prima facie” evidence against all the accused to proceed with the trial as everyone of them was part of the conspiracy and the intent to commit offence “may be inferred from their knowledge”.

On the other hand, all the accused including Raja opposed the framing of charges and the plea of CBI that they caused a loss of Rs 30,984 crore to the state exchequer in the grant of spectrum licenses.

Besides Raja and Kanimozhi, other accused include former telecom secretary Siddhartha Behura, Raja’s former personal secretary R K Chandolia, DMK-run Kalaignar TV’s MD Sharad Kumar, Bollywood filmmaker Karim Morani and Reliance ADAG executives Gautam Doshi, Hari Nair and Surendra Pipara.

The accused also included Unitech Ltd’s MD Sanjay Chandra, Swan Telecom promoters Shahid Usman Balwa and Vinod Goenka and directors of Kusegaon Fruits and Vegetables Asif Balwa and Rajeev Agarwal.
Meanwhile, former Telecom Minister Dayanidhi Maran was on Wednesday questioned by the CBI for over five hours on alleged irregularities in 2G spectrum allocation during his tenure.
Earlier this week, the agency had questioned his brother Kalanidhi Maran in connection with the preliminary enquiry in spectrum allocation during 2001-07 and allegations of pushing for Aircel takeover by Malaysia-based Maxis group, CBI sources said.

Govt to bring Lokpal bill in next session of Parliament:-Union Law Minister Salman Khurshid has said that the government will bring a bill in the next session of Parliament to prevent people with criminal background to contest elections. Talking to media persons at Farrukhabad in Uttar Pradesh on Sunday, he said, consultations with political parties have already taken place and discussions are on with other stake-holders in this regard.

Referring to social activist Anna Hazare's demand for Right to recall the elected representatives from Parliament and State Assemblies, he said it is not possible without taking political parties into confidence.
