Journalists holding a protest rally in Karachi

Electronic and print media journalists are holding a rally at 4pm on II Chundrigar Road today (Saturday) in protest against the illegal disruption of Geo TV in Karachi. Protesting journalists will later march to the Karachi Press Club where a protest meeting will be held.
Civil society and journalists across the country have condemned the disruption of Geo News position on TV cable network in Karachi.
Supreme Court Bar Association’s former president Asma Jahangir has said that this is not the first time such treatment has been meted out to Geo News
She said the Supreme Court, Lahore High Court and Islamabad High Court have already given their verdicts, directing Pemra to take action against those who indulge in such unlawful activities.
Pemra had given this commitment in the courts that it would monitor the cable operators and take action against such cable networks, she added. It is a violation of the law and Pemra should take action in this regard, she said.
Senior analyst Imtiaz Alam, who is also the secretary general of South Asian Free Media Association (SAFMA) said that pushing Geo to last numbers on cable was an attack on the independence of the media. It is like exploiting the organization economically so that it is closed down ultimately.
He said in a statement that Geo and Jang Group is again under attack as Geo broadcasts have been placed in the oblivion of tail Enders — a typical method of throwing you out of the market and denying people’s right to know.
Geo and Jang had come under attack two years earlier- but it survived despite incurring huge losses that have not yet been covered. It’s again being financially strangulated by curtailing its outreach in Karachi and elsewhere.
The management was and is under tremendous pressure to compromise its freedom of expression and editorial autonomy. It is being pressurized to change its stance over the issues of democracy, fundamental rights and policy issues. Unfortunately, the elected governments are not taking a firm stand against the unlawful encroachments and diminishing of media freedom. If the politicians think that democracy will survive after the muzzling of press freedom, they live in fool’s paradise.
Commenting on pushing Geo to last numbers on cable, central convenor of Council of All Pakistan Press Clubs Arshad Ansari said that all journalists were with Geo News, because the channel did not terminate even a single worker despite facing curbs and problems.
Senior analyst Najam Sethi said that the timing of the current attack was very dangerous. Doing such a thing with Geo shows that a conspiracy is being hatched against the channel and gagging Geo is like silencing the biggest voice of the media, he added.
Former president of PFUJ Pervaiz Shaukat said that pushing Geo to last numbers was an attack on the independence of the media, and it would affect thousands of journalists.
Islamabad High Court Bar President Tariq Mehmood Jehangiri said disruption Geo position on cable network was a violation of Article 19 of the Constitution and an attack on the press freedom. He said everyone has the right to freedom of expression and it is an injustice to the most famous channel of Pakistan. He said it is the economic murder of the media workers, and journalists across Pakistan would protest against it.
Former president of PFUJ Afzal Butt appealed to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to take action against those responsible for this injustice to Geo channel.
Barrister Salahuddin said that clearly mentions that all the news channels would be placed in a single group and the cable operators changing their position was a violation of that.
Karachi Press Club President Fazil Jamili said journalists had protested against a similar attempt in the past and they would support Geo again at every forum.
Senior analyst Hamid Mir said those who did not have the guts to talk openly and those who lacked logic wanted to impose their agenda through a conspiracy and baseless allegations.
Senior journalist Iftikhar Ahmed said one could not support democracy and present people’s problems and desires in this manner.
Lahore Press Club Secretary Shadaab Riaz said there was no justification to place the country’s largest TV channel at the last numbers, which was tantamount to animosity to the channel and journalists.
LPC President Shahbaz Mian said that was a curb on freedom of expression. Although Pemra existed, it lacked the desired reputation and that’s why cable operators had become a mafia, he said.
Shahzeb Khanzada said the cable operators were a power which was used to manipulate the position of TV channels and used to blackmail Geo.
He said the court should be moved and complaints filed with Pemra if Geo was involved in something wrong.
National Press Club President Shakil Anjum said others would also face the same situation currently being faced by Geo and therefore everyone should unite and work together for the purpose.
Senior analyst Suhail Warraich said although there was a Constitution and democracy in the country, the actions being taken against Geo were against the law, Constitution and democracy.
Senior journalist Talat Hussain said if there’s anyone having any case against Geo, then a forum was available to fight the matter. The Jang Group representative stated that a judicial commission could be formed in case anyone had any material, Talat added.
Senior analyst Idrees Bakhtiar described the move as an attack on press freedom. He said such moves had never been practiced in any democratic country, as he demanded a probe into why Geo was being shut.
Rawalpindi-Islamabad Union of Journalists (RIUJ) President Ali Raza Alvi said that Geo was continuously under attack, which was a violation of the press freedom.
RIUJ General Secretary Bilal Dar said that it was strange that attacks on the press freedom were continuing, though a democratic government was in place in the country.
The Pakistan Bar Council (PBC), along with the Geo administration, would move the Supreme Court of Pakistan if Geo News was not restored to its original position.
Chairman of the Free Legal Aid Committee of the PBC, Ch Ishtiaq Ahmad Khan, said that those who loved yellow journalism were mistaken to believe that they would get something by using such tactics against Geo and Jang group. He said throwing Pakistan’s most popular channel on the last numbers was worst discrimination and violation of the basics provisions of the Constitution.
Another PBC leader, Shuaib Shaheen, said the freedom of media was being curbed in a technical way by throwing the channel on last number so that no one could find it on cable. PBC member Muhammad Aaqil lauded the step taken by the Pemra chairman, and advised the government to support it.
Islamabad High Court Bar Association Chairman Tariq Mehmood Jehangiri said the action against Geo violated Article 19 of the Constitution as it curbed freedom of expression. He demanded formation of an independent commission to probe the issue.
Islamabad District Bar Association President Syed Muhammad Tayyab said that the bar stood by Geo and demanded the prime minister take strict notice of the issue.
Human Rights Welfare Trust Chairman Kokab Iqbal urged the Supreme Court to take notice of the situation.
Jamaat-e-Islami leaders Sirajul Haq, Liaquat Baloch and Amirul Azeem said the move was a violation of the court orders and Pemra laws.

Syria: 35 civillians killed in US-led airstrikes

Syria, at least 35 civilians were killed by fresh US-led airstrikes
near Ghandur town close to Manbej, controlled by the Islamic State
terror group.
The strikes come in the context of the US support to the Kurdish-led
Syrian Democratic Forces, or SDF, which has besieged Manbej in a bid
to flush out IS militants.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights also reported the strike.
Manbej has a strategic importance to the US-backed rebels due to its
location near to the Turkish border.

Militants killed in Afghanistan

Afghanistan, 57 militants have been killed and several others wounded in offensives by government forces.
Defence Ministry said, the fresh offensives have been launched in 13 provinces of the country. Two government soldiers were also killed in the operation.

Data from Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign hacked

United States, Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign has been hacked as part of a larger cyber intrusion against Democratic Party institutions.
US media reports that the latest hack follows two data breaches involving the Democratic National Committee and the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.
Mrs Clinton’s campaign said in a statement that intruders had gained
access to an analytics program used by the campaign and maintained by the national committee, but it said that it did not believe that the campaign’s own internal computer systems had been compromised.
Amidst reports of Russian involvement in trying to influence the Presidential campaign, Moscow has denied any involvement in the cyber intrusion.
FBI said, it was examining reports of cyber-intrusions involving multiple political entities but did not identify the targets of the intrusion.

Army guns down two militants in Kashmir.SC ask centre Report J&K

Army today foiled an infiltration bid along the Line of Control in Naugam sector of North Kashmir’s Kupwara district. Two militants were killed while two soldiers also martyred in the operation.
An army official said, troops noticed suspicious movement along the LoC in Naugam sector during the intervening night and challenged the intruders, who opened fire. The soldiers returned fire leading to the gunbattle, in which two militants were killed.
He said, a soldier was also injured in the operation which was going on till last reports came in. The official said, two AK rifles, one grenade launcher and other war-like stores were recovered from the
scene of the gunbattle.
This is second major infiltration bid foiled by the army in Naugam sector this week. Four militants were killed and one was apprehended alive in a failed infiltration bid on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, barring parts of Srinagar city, Anantnag and Pampore towns, curfew was today lifted from Kashmir even as normal life remained disrupted due to the strike called by separatists.
A police official said, curfew was lifted from most parts of the Valley but restrictions on assembly of four or more people continued in entire Kashmir.Supreme Court has asked the Centre to file a status report
detailing, what it termed, the ground realities prevailing in Jammu
and Kashmir.
A bench, headed by Chief Justice TS Thakur, however, did not issue
notice on the PIL, filed by senior advocate and Jammu and Kashmir
National Panthers Party leader Bhim Singh, seeking imposition of
Governor’s rule in the state.
Singh told the apex court that due to the use of pellet guns, persons
are becoming blind and there are no medical facilities available to
the citizens.
The court asked Singh about his visits to the Valley and to bring
before it one person who is unable to go to the hospital due to the
prevailing condition.
The court also cautioned Singh not to take political mileage of the proceedings.

Rajnath Singh in Assam to take stock of flood situation

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh has reached Guwahati to take stock of the situation as 19 lakh people are reeling under flood in 22 districts of Assam.
Official sources said that the Minister will conduct an aerial survey of Nagaon, Morigaon and Kaziranga. He will also be visiting Bhagatgaon camp in Morigaon district.
Chief Minister Sarbanand Sonowal and Chief Secretary will also accompany him.
The Home Minister will also hold a meeting with Chief Minister and state government officials in Guwahati.
AIR Correspondent reports that nearly five lakh displaced people have taken shelter at relief camps.
Meanwhile, overall flood situation slightly improved today except Dhubri and South Salmara.
CEO of state disaster management authority Dipak Sarma said that most of the rivers are showing a receding trend.
Mr. Sarma however said that the Brahmaputra is flowing above normal in Guwahati.

Parliamentarians Group for Children convenes roundtable on Sanitation

Parliamentarians Group for Children convenes roundtable on Sanitation
Members of the Parliamentarians Group for Children (PGC) and the Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation (MDWS) convened the roundtable on Sanitation in New Delhi. About 37 distinguished members from both houses of Parliament participated in the round table and put forward their suggestions to strengthen the Swacch Bharat Mission in India.
The roundtable, chaired by the Minister MDWS, Narendra Singh Tomar and convened by MP Vishweshwar Reddy also highlighted the innovative models to end open defecation in India.
The PGC is a multi-party platform, convened by Parliamentarians themselves, to engage with peers at the national and state levels for solution-based discussions and initiatives on a range of children’s issues. UNICEF has been a technical partner since its inception in 2013.
The group of parliamentarians attending the round table includes among others, Dushyant Chautala (INLD) from Haryana, Vandana Chavan (INC) from Maharashtra, Santosh Alahwat (BJP) from Rajasthan, Kahkashan Parveen (JDU) from Bihar, who have been championing issues of children at the national, state and constituency-levels.
“Access to sanitation and ensuring to end open defecation, especially in rural areas, is a top priority to develop a country where children can survive, thrive and live healthy lives. The role of legislators is pivotal in galvanizing the entire district administration and households, to take and sustain actions that result in 100 per cent coverage of ‘wanted’ and ‘used’ toilets,” said Ms. Foroogh Foyouzat, Chief Field Services and OIC, UNICEF India:
Suggestions by all the MPs were well received by the Minister, who promised that their views will be taken into account while devising campaigns at the district level.
“Parliamentarians have given valuable suggestions, which ministry will take into cognisance. We need to all work hard, so that Mahatma Gandhi’s dream of clean India is realised,” the Minster said.

Harka Bahadur Chetry, Chairman of Gorkha Autonomous Council Demand Committee (GACDC) popular as ‪#‎Gorkhafa‬ representing approximate 30Lakhs Gorkhalis of the state have undetaken a non-violent democratic peaceful long march named ‘MARATHON MARCH’ from Mukong Selek, Jonai in Dhemaji district to Dispur, Guwahati (approx 600 kms) from 19th July 2016 onwards in protest against discrimination in providing OI (Original Inhabitant ) status to the Gorkhas of Assam in the NRC Upgradation process.
The march has entered Balipara from Biswanath Chariali this morning.
His wife Anju chetri and daughter Angana Chetri and father-In-Law also joined the long amrch along with thousands of FGorkhas of the region and Assam.

• Deposits
Total Deposits of the Bank recorded a yoy growth of 7.0% to reach Rs. 553952 Cr as on June’16.
CASA deposits increased to Rs 203510 Cr in June’16 recording a yoy growth of 12.1%. Domestic
CASA share improved to 41.39% as on June ’16 from 38.94% in June’ 15. The share is one of the
highest among nationalized banks.
Saving deposits increased by14.4% on yoy basis to Rs 171122 Cr.
• Advances
Net Advances increased to Rs 391574 Cr registering a yoy growth of 2.8% as on June’16.
In line with Bank’s objective to achieve profitable growth from the grassroots, share of small ticket
advances to Non food credit increased to 58.9% in June ’16 from 56.1% in June’15.
Retail loans were at Rs 58550 Cr as on June’16, growing 19.7% on yoy basis over June’15. Housing
loan grew yoy by a robust 24.1% to Rs 27820 Cr in June’16.
MSME Advances increased to Rs 85502 Cr in June’16 showing yoy growth of 8.4%.

Credit to Micro & Small Enterprises grew by 8.4% to Rs 85502 Cr as on June’16.
Credit to Micro enterprises stood at Rs 28068 Cr showing yoy growth of 17.6%
The Share of Micro Enterprises of MSE Outstanding of previous year has increased from 43.4% to
45.4% as on 30.06.2016.
Stand Up India scheme launched by the Hon’ble Prime Minister on 05.04.2016. The Bank has
opened 1548 accounts and disbursed Rs 166.9 Cr as on Mar’June’16.
PROFITABILITY
• Operating & Net Profit
Operating Profit for June’ 16 stood at Rs 3275 Cr.
Net Profit for June’ 16 stood at Rs 306 Cr.
• Income
Total Income stood at Rs 13930 Cr. during June 16.
Net Interest Income during June 16 stood at Rs 3699 Cr and Non-interest Income stood at Rs 2355
Cr in June 16.
• ASSET QUALITY
As on June ’16, Gross NPA ratio stood at 13.75% and Net NPA ratio was at 9.16%.
Provision Coverage Ratio stood at 52.5% as on June’16.
Restructured assets of the Bank declined to Rs 18909 Cr in June’16 from Rs 39969 Cr in June’15
For intensifying the efforts in NPA reduction, a ‘War Room’ at HO has been created. E-auction
drive and sale to ARCs are the other measures for recovery.
• HHR – People Before the Numbers
Completed the Competency Mapping Drive recently.
Intensive drive for skill building of the staff for on-boarding digital platform
PNB-Univ: An online learning platform has been launched which is available on all major Mobile
Platforms. It provides quick access to quality curriculum and training 24×7 right on the palm top
PNB NAVODAYA: An on-boarding & Mentoring Mechanism has been introduced for newly recruited
energetic, tech-savvy but inexperienced employees.
• FINANCIAL INCLUSION
PNB remains committed towards nation building and actively participated in all schemes launched by
the Govt.of India for financial & social empowerment of the masses.
Under the PM Jan Dhan Yojana, Bank opened 134.72 lacs accounts and issued 98.76 lacs RuPay
Cards as on June’16. Rs 3349 Cr have been mobilized in these accounts.
No of transactions through BC channel have increased to 76.18 Lacs in June’16 against 29.30 lacs
in June’ 15.
Income from Financial Inclusion activities have increased to Rs.17.75 crore in June’16 against
Rs.7.45 crore in June’15.
• MOVE TOWARDS DIGITALIZATION
Bank is moving towards digitalization and number of new age digital initiatives have been introduced
to provide greater ease and improved delivery of products and services to customers.
Concerted efforts are on to increase usage of Alternate Delivery Channels which account for around
58.1% of transactions.
• NEW PRODUCTS/INITIATIVES
Seamless integration of Internet Banking with retail Internet Banking and Mobile Banking enabled.
Green PIN facility for generation of duplicate PIN for debit card has been extended for new cards
also (except for PMJDY accounts).
Card to Card transfer facility has been started.
Mobile Banking registration & submission of Cheque Book Request enabled through ATMs.
Customers of other Banks can also register for Mobile Banking through PNB ATMs.
Enhanced transaction limit for Mobile Banking users from Rs. 50,000/- per day to Rs. 1.00 lakh per
day.
New Cards launched: Power Savings Debit card for women customers
Opening of Account through TAB Banking: Started Remote Account opening through Tablet PC
based solution.
Extending Immediate Payment Service (IMPS) services from Branches.
Mobile banking registration has been PNB customers-Non & made live for PNB
through Internet banking.
OTP has been made mandatory for Master Cards for IRCTC transaction.
NFS to Rupay Interface migration project has successfully made Live for all acquirer transactions.
